“Yeah,” I sighed unhappily.

“Just like that?”

“Yeah.” I winced. “Kind of.” Her head tilted with curiosity, and I explained, “I peeked through the blinds and noticed he was parked there for a while.”

“Wow. You told him you wanted him to lose control, then you just got out of his truck!” She shrieked with a giggle. My mattress bounced, and I groaned. “Why didn’t you, I don’t know, just kiss him!?” she exclaimed. I groaned.

“I don’t know. I was nervous! And I’d just blurted off how I was a grown woman who knew what she wanted and… I don’t know! Ugh!” I lay on my bed and covered my face with my arm. “Just shoot me, put me out of my misery.”

“Nope. I don’t think so.” The bed moved again, and when I pulled my arm away to look at my best friend, she sat up and stared at me.

“What?” I mumbled.

“So… you know what this means, right?”

“What?” I frowned.

“Babe, he’s into you,” she pointed out and then grinned. “And you’re into him!”

“Rory—“

“So?!”

“So, what?” I laughed, trying to figure out what she was thinking.

“Don’t you know what this means?!”

“That we like each other?”

“Like?” She looked at me like I was crazy. “He’s in love with you!”

“Okay, hold on, you’re adding one plus one and ending up with a hundred.”

“No. I’m not! Juniper, I know that because this is happening to you, you probably need a moment, but I’m going to catch you up here, and quick, because watching you pine for this man for the last three years has been hard.”

“Ror—”

“We’ve both grown up here, and I’ve known Mr. Whittaker my whole life.”

“Rory—"

“He isn’t some kind of Cassanova. If he’s into someone, which I don’t think I’ve ever heard of, which, you know my mom, she loves gossip, and she would have said something. If he’s been into you for almost three years…” My eyes widened as the pieces clicked into place.

“Rory.”

“Exactly!” She bounced. “So, what are you going to do about it?” I blinked. I opened and shut my mouth then chewed on my lower lip as I thought about what she was saying.

“What am I going to do about it?” I was genuinely curious about what my best friend could come up with. I wasn’t stupid or naïve. I’d realized we both liked one another. “Rory, I’m a virgin. I couldn’t flirt to get me out of a parking ticket!” I started to freak out. Thankfully, my best friend knew me better than I knew myself.

“Okay, so I have an idea.”

“Really?” She nodded with way too much enthusiasm, and I worried that whatever she had up her sleeve would be more than I could chew.

“Tonight’s the anniversary, right? Of when you two met?” I groaned.

“You remember?”

“Babe.” She shot me a look. “You celebrate it, ooh and aww every year about it.”
