My knowing her name seems to shock him and he jolts at my mention of her. He thought he’d kept a safe distance between me and her, since she works upstairs and we hardly mingle. Ha! Think again, sucker! Women talk. Idiot.

He looks up at the ceiling, plucking a pre-prepared speech out of the air. Perhaps whatever he thinks will placate me. “She believes I treated her badly when we were going out last year and now she knows I have someone else, she doesn’t like it.”

My eyes want to squeeze tight shut with utter incredulity, but I will them to appear rounded with understanding and wonderment.

“How did she find out about us?” I ask, inwardly grinning.

“Oh… no idea. She’s a bunny boiler, you know? Total psycho.”

God, I’m going to have so much fun bringing him down. Arsehole.

“No chance you could come visit kitty after all?” I brush my thigh against his.

“Maybe Friday night?” He looks hopeful; like perhaps he’ll convince his wife that drinks with the lads are required after a tough week. “What do you say?”

“Absolutely, let’s do it.”

“Oh, thank fuck,” he says, and lifts my hand to kiss it.

I drop a kiss on his cheek after standing up, my drink having gone down much quicker than his. “See ya later, tiger.” I give him a wink and sashay out.

Once I’m outside, I spot him through the window; he’s standing by the bar so he can watch me go as he sups up, quickly tossing back his beer lest he get done by his pregnant wife for being late. He’ll only leave once he knows I’m out of here.

I’ve definitely left him wanting more. Let’s get him panting like a dog, break into his phone, then burn down his dumbass castle full of lies.

After changing once home and pouring myself a glass of wine, I call Kallie who picks up instantly.

“Oh my god, what happened?” she gasps, giggling with excitement.

On the cab ride home, I told her I’d call once I got in, to tell her about today’s episode ofA Pack of Miles (Or Should It Be Lies).

It seems Miles might be the distraction we’vebothneeded.

“Well, where the heck do I start?” I’m snorting so much, I nearly have wine coming out of my nostrils.

Once I right myself, I tell her what happened today: Stacie storming through our section, then Daisie’s opinion of Miles, plus her trying to look at my computer while I was messaging him—and the dig about me “being next” according to the gossip mill.

Then I tell her about my encounter with him tonight.

“How long does he think he can continue lying and upholding the charade?” I can hear the amazement in her voice.

I’m sat sideways in my armchair, legs over one arm, glass tipped to my lips, shaking my head. “It’s bloody fantastical, right? I could see the indent of his wedding band at the pub. He probably removed it between leaving the building and arriving at the pub, so during the walk over. In the office, he had his hand in his pocket.”

“The utter bravado.”

“I know. How… uh… totally don’t get why he’s like this.”

She goes quiet, then murmurs, “What will you do? Have fun with it, or…”

I smack my lips together. “I’m really tempted to see how far he tries to go with it, you know?”

“I would be. It’s off the scale.”

“Yeah.” I take another sip. “He wants to come here Friday.”

She sucks in breath. “You’re gonna do it?”

“I think for those other girls who believed him, yeah. I can be calculated in a way they can’t.”
