“Like I said, though… I don’thaveto work.”

“So,” he sighs, “what about lunch over at my place? And a walk around Chelsea, perhaps. Grab a drink maybe. See what happens.”

“You live in Chelsea?” How exciting.

“Yeah.”

“I could seriously be persuaded, but I’d better just let you know on the day, if that’s all right? Just in case something crops up.”

“No problem.”

He doesn’t want to take this any further today, I can tell. I’m wondering if it’s because he doesn’t want to scare me off, when actually, his reluctance for a little kiss is disconcerting.

He quickly finishes his drink and takes his empty cup into the kitchen. I’m still drinking mine when he leans over the chair I’m sitting in, kisses my forehead and says swiftly, “I’ll see myself out. Just wanted to get you back safe.” He’s practically racing for the door.

“Oh, so I don’t get a proper kiss goodnight?”

He halts his lightspeed evacuation and turns around to look at me, surprised. “You want a kiss?”

“Wouldn’t mind a little one.”

“Okay.”

He holds out his hand for me to take and pulls me towards him so we’re both standing. His fingers are rougher than I thought they’d be, but then he did warn me that he’s a bit of a charity action man as well as being an office junkie.

When he finally touches my waist, I like the feel of his hands on me. I instinctively slide my arms underneath his and hold my hands around his shoulders. His body is thick and solid and I can feel the way his muscles move in response to my touch.

Aidan smiles ever so slightly as he stares at my mouth, then moves in slowly to plant a soft kiss on my lips. When I kiss him back, that’s when all bets are off. He drags me into his solid body, his pecs so defined I can feel them against my breasts. Pinning me to him as his full mouth plucks at mine, it’s like I’m his instrument and he’s the artist. Our tongues tentatively feel one another out and it’s lovely, and sexy, and I feel the stirrings of desire.

He pulls away first and gazes into my eyes with that penetrative, unyielding stare of his.

“Monday?” he asks.

“I think I can swing it.”

“Monday,” he whispers again, and kisses my cheek this time, lingering to smell my hair.

He’s wearing the biggest smile as he backs away, looking cocky as hell.

“Thanks for a great day,” I say before he leaves.

“Pleasure was all mine, fair Mirabelle.”

He’s gone… and then I hear the engine start outside.

God, I wasn’t expecting that today.

Chapter Six

Late on Saturday night the next day, my phone rings. I kick myself for imagining it might be him. I won’t be that stupid woman ever again who’s all aflutter over the possibility of currently being one man’s ultimate desire. Sure that feeling is great but it can also be misleading. And anyway, when I reach the ringing device and see Kallie’s name on the screen, all thoughts of Aidan evaporate. I’m so glad she’s calling. We haven’t spoken properly since Valentine’s.

“Hey, you,” I answer, seating myself in my favourite armchair, pyjamas already on.

“Hey, hun. How’s it going?”

“Uh, yeah… just chilling to the max. You all right? You sound a bit shaky.”

“Yeah, I, uh… well… I went to Biscot Mill for some drinks with my cousins tonight and your dad’s pal, Graham Fitz was in there.”
