Mom grinned. “Nothing, dear. I supposed he’s being overly protective since he’s finally noticing that you’re growing up.”

“Thank you for taking me shopping. I love my hair, and I’m so excited about my dress.”

“You deserve it, Amy. I think that sometimes, I take you for granted,” Mom admitted, heaving a sigh.

“Nah,” Amy said softly. Rushing up to Mom, she kissed her gently on the cheek.

When Amy left the room, Mom had the oddest expression on her face.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

“Okay, so what in the heck is going on with me, Brownie?” Lex muttered, after dressing in a nice pair of khakis and sweater. “Since when does someone like me volunteer to be a chaperone at a high school dance?”

Cocking his head, Brownie started whining.

“Thanks for the support,” Lex answered, grinning. “Come on. Let’s go wait for Amy to make her appearance.”

Lex followed the back staircase downstairs into the kitchen, grabbing a couple of the leftover burritos that they’d had for dinner from the fridge, warming them in the microwave.

Carrying the burritos on a paper plate, he headed into the conservatory, where Amy would make her grand entrance after Mom and Izzy were finished helping her dress.

Dad, the boys and the twins were already settled on the couch, watching TV.

It’s a good thing that Lex had finished swallowing his second burrito when Amy appeared at the doorway, otherwise he might have coughed them both up. He was just that stunned when he saw how beautiful she looked.

She was wearing a short off the shoulder gown that clung to her slim body like a second skin. But Amy definitely wasn’t a little girl any longer, Lex realized. She had a natural poise and inner beauty that shone from within when she smiled.

Like anangel, he thought, suddenly remembering the first day they’d met. Her blue eyes were intense when his eyes met hers, and Lex suddenly found his heart flipping over in his chest.

“Amy,” Dad was saying, looking slightly awed. “When did you grow up? You look so lovely.”

“Thanks, Dad,” she said, smiling widely when she turned to Lex.

Who suddenly frowned. “Isn’t that dress a little low cut to be wearing in October? Won’t you get cold? I think you should be wearing some kind of sweater over that.”

Lex heard Dad snorting, and for some reason, Mom started laughing.

Lex blinked, looking at Dad first and then at Mom. “What?”

“I’ll tell you why I’m laughing in about five more years,” she replied, sounding cryptic.

“Lex?” Dad muttered. “I think you’re forgetting to say something to Amy.”

“What?” he growled.

Dad’s look was reproving.

He grimaced. And all of a sudden, Lex felt sheepish. What in the heck was wrong with him? Amy was hissister.

Well, not really, but he’d better keep on telling himself that.

“You look good, Amy,” Lex finally admitted.

“Gee, thanks,” she mumbled. “I guess I’d better get my coat.”

“Wait,” Mom said. “We need to take some pictures, Amy.”

Another ten minutes later, Lex was pulling up in Dad’s truck near the solarium door.
