He shakes his head. “They shouldn’t have locked us in that room.”

I scream back at him. “You were inside me!”

“It was just sex.”

His words smack me in the face, jolting me back.

“Wow.” I gasp, feeling like I just got punched in the gut.

Elijah’s shoulders sag as he bows his head. “Just let me go.”

Not good enough.

I grab his face with both of my hands, searching his gray eyes for answers.

“What are you hiding?” I finally whisper.

“Believe me… You don’t want to know.”

Another invisible blow.

“So thereissomething?” I take a step back, trying to gain my balance as the rain falls harder.

I wait the length of three heartbeats, but he remains silent.

“Tell me.” I push at his chest again. “Tell me, Elijah.” I strike him harder.

“Evelyn, stop this,” he growls.

“No.” I grit my teeth. “Tell me what you’re running from.”

Anger brews in his eyes, and he stands to his full height.

“Goddammit!” he yells back. “Don’t you get it? I’m trying to protect you!”

“Tell me!” I scream, banging on his chest for the last time.

“It was ME!” he screams back. “I killed Ivy! She was in trouble, so I went to the one person I thought could save her.”

I stumble back as all life drains from my body.

“What?”

He moves closer, getting in my face, anger and pain plaguing his.

“Are you fucking happy now?! I fed her to the goddamn devil himself.”

Time stills as I grasp the fraying strings of reality.

“Why?”

My lungs fight to fill with air, and it hurts to even say that one word.

He lays his forehead against mine. “I’m so sorry.”

“Why?” I whisper again, struggling to stand.

“She was pregnant.”
