“Don’t be a dick, Evie. I’m staying in here with you, and if you want to talk, I’ll be here,” she says.

I roll my head back and stare at the ceiling. “There’s nothing to say.”

“What was in the box?” she presses.

“I don’t want to talk about it. Better question: what are we doing for dinner?”

Before she gets a chance to push the subject of the box any further, my laptop notification bell pings. I swing my legs over the side of the bed and walk towards my desk. Anything to keep from having to talk about the last few hours.

I look down to see that it’s a new email notification from Stratham U Admin Offices. It must be my finalized fall schedule that I neglected to pick up today because of the shit show in the commons room.

When I open it, though, I realize that I made a mistake. It most certainly isn’t my fall schedule.

I’m so glad you’ve decided to come back. I must admit, I’m quite surprised, but then again, I’ve always been good at picking the fiery ones. I do hope you liked your birthday present. I’ll be seeing you before your next one. I’m already hard thinking about it…

I slam my laptop shut and crawl under my covers without a single word. After a few more minutes of silence, Celeste finally lets me be in peace so I can officially skip the rest of today.

“Pleeaassee…. I’m asking for one night,” Taylor whines from behind my bedroom door.

I grab my pillow, put it over my face, and scream into it. He’s impossible when he wants something. He’s been at it for the last twenty minutes; long enough to drive me insane and get me stabby. I hear Celeste shuffle towards the door.

“Do NOT let him in here, Cele,” I warn, but she does it, anyway. Sigh.

I throw my pillow at him as soon as he enters my domain, but he catches it with a smirk on his face.I should have thrown my knife.

“Want me back in your bed?” he says, and the shit-eating grin on his face makes me want to punch him.

I sit up in my bed. My eyes laser on his. “I’m not going to the stupid party. I don’t care that it’s the last party of the summer. I don’t care that my college memories won’t be full of drunken nights. I’m not going.”

“Eves, please? You’ve been in here for days, and…” He raises his eyebrows and pouts his lip like a three-year-old. “I can’t show up stag. I’ll be the laughingstock of the brotherhood.”

“Fuck if I care. You went by yourself last year.” I throw my head back down on my bed. “Take Celeste.”

Celeste snorts. “I’m not going anywhere without you. Ever.”

He shoots his arm out, palm up, in her direction. “See! She won’t go without you.”

“Then go by yourself, Bryant.”

“Wow, you never call me by my last name. It’s sorta sexy.”

“Jesus H. Christ. Get the fuck out of my room,” I snap and turn to Celeste. “I’m going to stab him. Just go with him so I can be in peace.”

Her eyes grow wide. “Not a fucking chance in hell. Why do I have to placate him while you get to stay in bed and away from the vultures?”

Taylor huffs. “You’re not going alone. What the hell am I, chopped liver?”

He falls to his knees, hands pressed together in prayer. “I am literally begging you both to come with me. No one is going to bother you. Justin’s made sure that everyone leaves you alone tonight.” His honey brown eyes look between the both of us. “I’ll buy you guys Sugar & Spice every day for two whole weeks.”

Celeste looks from Taylor to me like she’s considering his offer.Dammit.

“I’ll go. But only if you go. I can’t face those bitches by myself,” she says to me.

“Are you seriously telling me that you want to be around those dumb fucks?” I question in irritation.

She smiles at me and then at Taylor. “Not even in the slightest. But Taylor is offering a month of free coffee.”
