“Seriously? You’re gonna try for small talk? Maybe Taylor should drive. You’re clearly in no condition to be operating a motor vehicle.”

He mumbles angrily under his breath before speaking. “I’m just asking a fucking question.”

“Evie, be nice. He’s trying to be cordial,” Taylor adds from behind me.

“Fuck cordial,” I reply.

“Cordial?” Celeste says, exasperated. “Did the penises in this car forget that the asshole driving left Evie naked and unconscious on the bathroom floor last year?”

I cringe at the memory, desperately wishing that moment in my timeline could be forgotten.Goddammit, Celeste, leave it.

I examine Caleb through my eyelashes. He still has the steering wheel in a vice grip, veins bulging on his forearms, and the memory of seeing my scars dances across his face.

Shit.

“Don’t, Caleb,” I whisper and stare out the window.

“Where’d you get them?” he questions.

“None of your goddamn business.”

“Did they do that to you at Ventura?”

I scoff. “No. Not that it’s any of your business,” I repeat.

“What’s Ventura?” Celeste enquires from the back.

“Probably better to ask that later, buttercup. Let the kids talk it out,” Taylor whispers.

“Who did that to you, Evelyn?” Caleb growls out. “Stop being difficult.”

I look over, tilting my head in his direction.

“How about you focus on getting us back to campus?”

“Tell me what the fuck happened to you,” he snaps.

I shake my head and go back to staring out the window, letting silence fill the car.

He blows out a long, steady breath.

“Evelyn.”

“Caleb,” I mock.

More silence.

He grumbles in frustration.

“Fuck off a cliff and die,” I say, clenching my teeth to keep myself from saying what no one needs to hear.

He finally pulls the car into Stratham’s parking lot, and I’m out of the car, slamming the door, before it even comes to a complete stop.

“God-fucking-dammit, Evelyn!” He slams the door, and I hear his footsteps quicken behind me.

I pick up my pace, trying to get as much distance between us as possible. But before I can get to the front entrance, Caleb grabs the inside of my elbow, yanking me towards him.

“Who did that to you? Do not make me ask you again.” Each word coming out of his mouth is more deadly than the last.
