She gives me a short nod of her chin and waves her hand for me to continue while Alik chuckles.

I turn back to Alik. “What’s it going to cost to pay for a debt that should have never been mine in the first place?”

His eyes volley between Celeste and me for a minute before he answers.

“I need information on the accusations that were made at the club.”

I cross my arms over my chest. “Simple. Get it from the people that the debt should belong to. Problem solved.”

Alik shakes his head. “I don’t trust them. If what they say is true, I think the problem is bigger than I can afford. If it’s a lie, I lose my position.”

“What does that mean? What position are you in?” Celeste questions.

I raise my hand in a stop motion. “No questions, Cele. I mean it.”

“But I—” she tries to protest, but Alik cuts her off, his demeanor serious once again.

“She’s right, beautiful. The less you know, the better.”

My eyes bug out as my head swirls back to him. In the few years I’ve known him, he has never hidden his position in his family’s business before, especially from a girl. He wears his surname like it’s the golden ticket.

He shrugs his shoulders at my unasked question.

“Get me confirmation, and the debt is paid.”

“You do realize the risk you’re putting me in? These people own this school. Just declare my debt paid and find someone else.”

He shakes his head. “You’re in the best position to get the job done, and I trust you. Besides, you don’t belong here with these people, Styx. This isn’t you.”

As much as I want to decline, I know that I can’t. You don’t exactly say no to the Bianchi family.

“It’s Evelyn. And fine—I get you the information, the debt is paid, AND I’m officially retired. I’m done after this, Alik. I mean it.”

He stands, reaching into his jacket pocket, pulling out a .38 caliber revolver, and hands it to me. “I heard what happened at the cafe. Technically, they didn’t do anything that would require me to act, so I’m giving this to you. They seem a little unhinged,” he says with a wink.

I can hear Celeste gasp, and I sigh. We were doing so well, but I know that she’s going to want every detail of my life once he’s gone.

Alik looks in her direction and squishes his eyebrows together. Misunderstanding her reaction, he reaches into his jacket again, pulling out a Glock, but this time from his holster.

“Here. Give your friend the one I just gave you, and you can use this.”

What the hell has gotten into him?

“Alik, she doesn’t need—”

“She does.” His words broker no argument, silencing mine.

I follow his gaze to her and find her staring back at him, but she says nothing—literally nothing. My jaw opens slightly as I watch the two of them hold a wordless conversation that makes me instantly feel like I’m the third wheel.Um… okay.

He moves towards her, grabbing her hand and raising it to his lips.

“Until we meet again, bella,” he says with a wink.

“Who the fuck are you?” someone shouts from the threshold of our front door.

Fuck.

I snap my head to the door and find Taylor standing there, coffees in hand and a bag full of pastries hanging from his arm with a look of murder on his face.
