I fall further into the shadows of the gazebo to hide my presence while they make their way back to the partygoers who are hanging by the pool.

“She’s no one, Genna. All you ever talk about nowadays is how she doesn’t belong here and how upset you are. What is your obsession with her?” he asks, sounding tired and annoyed.

“I’m not obsessed. I’m concerned. How can you not be worried or angry, at the very least? She shot your so-called best friend. What if it had been me? Jesus, Caleb, ever since she got here, it’s like every dick in Psi Kappa Psi lost their balls.”

I watch as Caleb straightens his spine and expands his chest.

“Be very careful about the next words that come out of your mouth, Genna. My tolerance for your shit is no longer in existence.”

She scoffs. “It only bothers you because you know what I’m saying is true.”

He moves in front of her, putting his hand against the wall, preventing her from moving forward.

“And that right there is why you will never be anything more than a housewife,” he grinds out. “He’s not my best friend. He’s my brother.”

“I’m not a housewife, and you’re being a grade-A dick right now. What happened to the Caleb I met freshman year?”

He tilts his head to the side, rubbing his chin.

“You know what, you’re right. I was a nice guy—still am to most people. I even think there was a time when I thought the Knights’ council chose right with you. Wanna know what happened? You, Genna. You happened.”

“No, Caleb. Evelyn happened.”

I shake my head in the shadows. This girl and her jealousy are so clearly misplaced. It’s not because of me.

Genna continues. “She’s going to destroy this school, our futures. She’s going to burn it all down to ashes. She seems to have an affinity for that.”

“What did you just say?” he says, taken aback.

She looks up at him with innocent doe eyes. “I’m just saying… it seems like fire would be her thing.”

“How’d you—”

I sit up straighter, wondering what the fuck this bitch knows about me?

A second later, someone shouts at them to hurry up. And just like that, she straightens her shoulders, places her hand inside his elbow, and they continue walking in the direction they were heading, like nothing ever happened.

I stare at their backs as they greet their friends. The social impetus required by the elite is beyond understanding. I don’t care what social circle I’m in, I’m not going to be with someone because I’m told to.

“You’ve also never dated anyone,” I whisper to myself.

I lean back against the post and go back to staring at the night’s sky, picking out the constellations I remember, and let myself lose track of time.

My eyes open to the sound of heated voices, and I look in the direction of the small crowd by the pool.

“Come on, Alexis. Cut it out. You’re Elijah’s chosen.”

I watch as the guy from my Calculus class swipes Alexis’s hand off his arm, trying to get her to move away, but she just keeps moving closer to him. I squish my eyebrows together, wondering what the hell is going on with her. Not that I care, I’m just mildly curious. It’s like a car wreck and not being able to turn away.

“He doesn’t want me anymore, Waylon.” She pouts, and then starts tracing her fingers over his broad chest. “There was a time when you used to want me.”

He raises his hands and takes a step back. “I’m not stupid, Alexis. I’m not playing this game with you just so you can try to make him jealous.”

I watch as she continues to ignore his words and tries to touch him again. I shake my head. Jesus, doesn’t anyone at this school know that no means no?

“I don’t do junkies, anyway. Do yourself a favor and wipe your goddamn nose,” he says. The guys hanging around chuckle as she quickly wipes her nose with the back of her wrist.
