“Who? How many? Where are you?” he asks in rapid succession.

“In the shipping district,” I reply.

He growls into the phone. “How many, Evie!”

“I don’t know!” I shout back.

I can hear him shout for Elijah, followed by the slamming of doors. I turn onto the next street, searching for the Escalade. Did they turn here?Fuck. This isn’t the street.

I keep driving, turning on different streets, following my gut and hoping to see something familiar. A few minutes later, I finally see the Escalade in the parking lot of an abandoned warehouse.

“Evelyn, where are you right now?” Caleb’s booming voice is commanding through the Bugatti’s speakers.

I look for a street sign but there are none. This part of town has definitely seen better days.

“I don’t know. There aren’t any street signs that I can see.” I grip the steering wheel tighter in frustration. “But I see the Escalade. It’s in a warehouse parking lot.”

The SUV sits unmoving, so I decide to park behind it. I describe the building to the best of my ability, but looking around, all the buildings look the same.

“Get out of the fucking parking lot. You don’t know who could be in there,” Caleb barks.

“I’m not leaving him!”

I squeeze the steering wheel, straining the skin on my knuckles to keep my hands from shaking.

“Evelyn, do not get out of that car!” Caleb commands into the phone, but it’s too late.

The next thing I know, I’m being pulled out of the car by my hair and thrown to the graveled ground, the tiny rocks scraping my wrists.

“Caleb!” I scream, but I’m not sure he hears me as I’m dragged into the warehouse.

Two men forcibly tie me to a metal chair in the expansive space. Directly in front of me is a bloody Micah hunched over and tied to another chair. He lifts his head and fear blanches his skin as he sees me.

“Angel.” His voice is a pained whisper as he says my name.

The room echoes with the sound of a punch to Micah’s face by a familiar man standing next to him.Benji?

I survey the rest of the room and find the jade-green eyes of Ryan fucking Metson.

“So glad you could join us, Evie. Saves me the trouble of looking for you.” His evil smirk sends a shiver down my spine as he approaches me.

My jaw clenches and I stare directly into his eyes. The man looks seriously unhinged. “What the fuck do you want, Ryan?”

He clasps his hands. “Right to the point. I love it.” He drops a hand to my face with a gentle caress. “You really are so beautiful, so perfect… Such a shame that you chose the wrong brother.”

“You are no brother!” Micah shouts and then grunts in pain as he takes another couple of punches from Benji.

Ryan continues to stare at me. His feral eyes betray his obsession. He speaks, his eyes never leaving mine, sure that his voice will carry in the vacant space.

“Au contraire, Micah. I’m not talking about your precious fraternity. I am more of a brother than you’ll ever be. Their blood is my blood. Can you say the same?”

I tilt my head to examine the man before me.

“What are you talking about?” I ask him, but he ignores my question.

“Why did you have to choose them? I could have given you all your life’s desires. They don’t even want you.” He scoffs and shakes his head in disappointment. “You should hear the bullshit they say about you. I’m going to take great pleasure in taking the throne from them. I am the rightful heir, you know?”

“I don’t understand. Elijah and Caleb aren’t blood.”
