I shake my head. “I don’t.”

“And yet, you have no fear, no reservation about them being here, and there was a smile on your face just now. Tell me… Why is that?”

I shrug my shoulders. “I don’t know how to answer that. I mean, I consider Taylor a friend. The other two aren’t going to do anything.”

She nervously looks over her shoulder and then looks around the entire deli, like she’s looking for someone.

“Dr. Lewis, what’s going—”

“I shouldn’t have brought you here,” she says, more to herself than to me.

I put my arms on the table and tilt my head.

“What’s wrong?”

She squares her shoulders and takes a deep breath.

“I made a mistake,” she says in a rushed whisper. “I didn’t realize that your circumstances had changed. I have to go.”

She leaves cash on the table and hurries out of the deli without so much as a goodbye.

What the hell was that about?

I look up to see Taylor watch Dr. Lewis scurry out of the deli and into her car. Once she’s out of the parking lot, he raises an eyebrow to me in a silent question.

I raise my hands, palms up, and shrug my shoulders. I finish my latte and head out to leave. As soon as I walk by the guys’ table, Caleb speaks.

“You got a ride home?” he questions.

“Yeah, my broomstick is outside,” I deadpan.

Taylor chuckles, which earns him a quick smack on the back of his head from Justin.

“We’ll take you home,” Caleb says.

“It’s not necessary. The Uber is on its way.”

He glares at me, and I just roll my eyes. “You’ve got to stop, Caleb. You can’t keep following me around.”

“It’s not like Iwantto, princess. It’s my job to make sure that you’re safe.”

I grit my teeth at the nickname. “Don’t be so dramatic. It wasn’t your job last year when you left me on the bathroom floor, was it? My safety is not yourjob.Leave the theatrics for your fiancée, who I’m sure is probably pissed that you’re even here.”

Caleb slams his hand on the table like a petulant child. “Goddamn it, Evelyn. She’s not my fiancée,” He growls.

“Whatever you say, your highness.” I can’t help the grin from spreading across my face, which only angers him more.

“You were attacked, and they’re still out there.”

“That was weeks ago.” My voice is strained with annoyance. “Tell the cops or your precious council if it matters that much to you, but for the love of fuck, stop following me.”

I don’t bother to wait for his response as I see the Uber pulling into the parking lot through the glass and hurry out before he gets the chance to stop me.

“When are you going to stop running from him,”my inner voice challenges in my head.

“When running is no longer an option,” I whisper to myself and close my eyes for the ride home.
