“Choose what?”

“Choose between Taylor and Justin.”

She tilts her head and looks at me like I’ve grown a horn, maybe two. “What the hell makes you think I have to choose?”

I raise my eyebrow. “Ah, so you’re going to build a harem, then.”

The death stare that she throws at me is the highlight of my day.

“There will be no harem. There will be no choosing. There will be no boys,” she says sternly.

I lean across the table and whisper. “Yet.”

She throws her hands in the air, picks up her plate, and dumps its contents into the trash can.

“Oh, come on, Cele. I was just teasing!” I smile and follow her to do the same.

She spins on her heels and looks up at me. “What about you? How are you going to choose?”

I snort. “Choose from who?”

“Let’s see.” She starts and raises her hand to count her fingers. “Micah for one, obviously. Caleb for two. And Elijah for three.”

I shake my head and put my arm around her shoulder as we walk out of the room. “There’s no one to choose. I told you last year, no boys. I’ve got school to finish. But if I must choose anyone, I choose you.”

She giggles at my answer, and we both come to an abrupt stop once we pass the common room.

The familiar voice of Genna Dupre echoes throughout the house. We get closer to the foyer to see Genna watching what looks like a very annoyed Caleb. He’s staring at the ceiling with his arms crossed over his chest, and Micah, Elijah, Justin, and Taylor are at his side.

“I can’t believe you skipped Glacier Ridge this year. You didn’t have to break tradition just because we’re on a break.”

I can see the muscles in Caleb’s jaw flex as he grinds his teeth.

“We’re not on a break, Genna. We broke up,” he articulates slowly.

She brushes her hand on his arm. “Don’t be silly. I’m your chosen. I respect the pressures you’ve been under this year and will give you your break, but it isn’t forever, and it most certainly isn’t permanent.”

She says the word ‘permanent’ like it’s tainted.

Elijah leans his head towards Micah, but speaks loud enough for everyone to hear.

“And this, ladies and gentlemen, is what medical professionals deem a delusional disorder. When an individual has an unshakable belief in something that isn’t true or based on reality.”

Genna snaps her head in Elijah’s direction and scowls. Micah turns slightly, pretending to be speaking to an imaginary camera behind him.

“Crikey! We have to be careful with that one. I hear the females can be particularly venomous,” Micah whispers in a terrible impression of Steve Irwin.

Taylor bites his fist to hold in his laughter, and Justin looks around the room in an effort to do the same. Unfortunately, I can’t hold the snort from escaping my lips, causing most of them to turn in our direction.

Oops.

“What’sshedoing here?” Genna gasps in shock.

“Who?” Caleb casually rolls his head towards us, feigning innocence.

“I knew there was something going on!” Genna tries and fails to gain her composure at the sight of me.

Caleb just shrugs his shoulders and turns back to face her. “There’s nothing here that warrants your concern, opinion, or approval. We aren’t together. Meaning, we are free to do whatever we want.”
