"That will do just fine," Andy said. "Will you make me a Bloody Mary tomorrow morning, too?"

"Sure," he replied easily. "Just as long as you don't mind coming to Alex's apartment for it, or me mixing drinks in mynakeds."

"We'll skip the nakeds," I said. "Thanks."

"I noticed that the other apartment on this floor is for sale," Riley said. "Wouldn't it be cool if Alex and I moved in there? We could be neighbors and you could come over for Bloody Marys all thetime."

"That's not going to happen," Isnapped.

"It could," Rileyargued.

"No." It wasn't happening because I bought that apartment yesterday. "It's undercontract."

"That was fast," Andysaid.

This didn't deter Riley. I wasn't certain anything deterred my youngest brother. "I'll have to watch the units downstairs, then."

"Or you could live somewhere else," I suggested."Anywhere else, actually."

Andy turned back to face me, locking her arms around my waist in the process. "Wasn't there something you wanted to talk about?" she asked, tipping her head toward Riley. "What were you saying? Before theinterruption?"

I gazed down at her, taking in her dark eyes, full lips, flawless skin. "Nothing that can't wait untillater."

Chapter Ten

Stremmel

I'd been tryingto weasel out of this event all day but between Hartshorn and Emmerling, I had no hope. They had me cornered, and they weren't letting me off easy. I tried picking up a hot appendix, but Hartshorn handed the case off to a resident and ordered me to change out of myscrubs.

Fuck mylife.

I didn't know anyone at this party aside from the GI hottie, who I adored primarily because she was unavailable and that was my kryptonite. Also, on my second day at the hospital, she told me where to get a life-altering gyro and she wasn't wrong. It did change mylife.

Aside from the woman of my unattainable dreams, I only knew Hartshorn and Acevedo, and the GI hottie's boyfriend. I didn't exactlyknowhim. We just traded glares in thehallway.

Hartshorn rapped his knuckles on my locker in the attending surgeons' lounge. "Let's get a move on," he said. "Emmerling will catch up with uslater."

"Forgive me," I started, gesturing to him. The guy was like a goddamn boulder. I didn't understand how he had the dexterity to work on hearts. "But where the hell are we going? And who are thesepeople?"

He moved his shoulders in the type of shrug that clearly communicated his disinterest in replying. "Acevedo's in-laws. Basically," he said. "They're good people and they always have good food and drink." He gestured to me, indicating that I was to finish dressing. "It'll be fine. Comeon."

I figured the guy was going to be Chief of Surgery soon enough, and I'd better do as I was told. I didn't have it in me to fuck up another gig, and as much as I hated the cold weather, I tolerated thishospital.

Tolerance was as close as I could come to enjoying anything thesedays.

No. No, that wasn't right. I enjoyed the hell out of that GI surgeon. That woman knew how to wear a pair of scrubs, my god. And she was fucking nice to me.Nice. Tome. No one had been intentionally nice to me since Christ was acarpenter.

But since the world hated me, the GI surgeon had a boyfriend, and that guy made a point of stabbing me with his eye daggers every time our paths crossed. He knew what I was thinking when I looked at her, and he didn't appreciate those thoughts. That should've given me pause. Forced me to reflect on my behavior. Itdidn't.

"You're sure about this?" I asked as I shoved my arms into a shirt. "Seems strange for me to crash a familyevent."

He stared at his pager, frowning. "They won't mind. It's a biggroup."

"Yeah, sure," I murmured. "I'll just blend in. That alwaysworks."

"They won't mind if you sit in the corner feeling sorry for yourself all night," headded.

It wasn't clear whether he was speaking from experience or commenting on my general demeanor. Probablyboth.
