His arm banded hard around me and pulled me under him. I was on my stomach in an instant with his groin flush to my ass. He’d been semi-hard a moment ago, but the thrill of taking what he wanted had gotten him to full mast.

“Don’t be like that, baby. I know what you like.”

He didn’t.

“You love it when I beg.”

I didn’t.

“Tomorrow night, okay?” I pushed myself up on my elbows and looked behind me.

He groaned in frustration and flopped back onto his spot like a petulant child who had been told he wasn’t getting a new toy.

“Fine, but you owe me a blow job before you leave for class.” He pouted, rolled over, and was snoring within minutes.

I would be long gone before he woke up. My class was hours before his, and he valued sleep more than getting his dick wet from a “lousy lay.”

That little comment would be forever seared in my brain. I tucked it away with all the other small, backhanded things he’d said to me in the past. Like the time he met my parents and said he hoped I didn’t look like my mother when I was her age because he’d have to trade me in for a younger model. He’d said this at the party I’d thrown for her after her last round of chemotherapy. It was the reddest flag, but we’d just moved into the townhouse and I’d had nowhere else to go.

I pulled the blankets under my chin, and my thoughts traveled once more to the demon I felt lurking outside. The warm feeling of safety tipped my fingers and toes until I fell into dreams where a dark figure’s hands brought me to my breaking point over and over.

Chapter10

Vassago

Celeste had slammed the door in my face. She’d chosen Duncan over me, and I was willing to do anything to see his bones ground to paste. But the heartbroken look she’d given him was the crack in the armor I needed to shatter her whole guard.

With the envy I’d inspired, I’d imbued doubt within both of them. Though, I knew I was only adding fuel to a fire lit long before I’d arrived. Where Duncan’s rage felt like a freshly lit match that struck and sizzled in the moment with high intensity, Celeste’s felt like a flow of a volcano at a constant sputter.

I could say I achieved two victories in the altercation: getting under Duncan’s skin and into the recesses of his mind and the spelled barricade was broken. The ward on her home was gone, which meant I could enter when I wanted, but not tonight. She needed her sleep and I was due for a drink with my brother.

The next few days, I watched Celeste from afar. Her classes were long, but her study hours were longer. I hid within the shadows during those late sessions in the library and watched as she drank too much coffee and didn’t eat nearly enough.

She was mine to care for, after all. And when the day came that she finally gave over to me, I would ensure that all her needs were met. For now, slipping an extra snack into her bag or refilling her water bottle while her back was turned were my only contributions without directly interfering.

She and Duncan had been on minimal speaking terms since I’d intercepted their reunion celebration, due in part to Duncan frantically setting his transfer in motion. From over her shoulder, I read several text reminders from him telling her to see her guidance counselor and to get a copy of her transcripts. She ignored them, and pride expanded my chest. She was a fighter, and she wasn’t going to be pushed into someone else’s version of her.

I’d stayed close, gently waking her when she fell asleep with her head in her books.

I revved the engine of my motorcycle at stoplights that she sat at far too long.

I only left her vicinity when I saw the small light of her phone die out for the night through her window.

She could ignore me for now, but sooner or later, she would say my name and bring me to her side.

Until then, I was her guardian, my clipped wings laid at her feet as a proposition.

Celeste

Friday finally came. Duncan was headed back to Boston the next morning to secure an apartment on campus to finish out the rest of the semester. I’d convinced him that I would join him during his summer internship, but I had no real intention behind the promise.
