Arran growled in frustration. But I couldn’t feel frustration.

Avalon was neutral… “Can you answer my questions?”

Something flickered in those placid blue eyes. “That depends what you ask.”

Understanding lit inside of me. “We cannot go to Avalon and speak with the priestess. Can you bring her to us?”

“No.”

Arran snarled. “Why not—”

I dropped back a step, enough that I could lay my hand on Arran’s arm. “Avalon is neutral.”

“I can hear just fine.”

“She’s answering my questions.”

“She’s evading your questions.”

“Just… just let me try.”

Arran’s black eyes were murderous—and that dark intent seemed to be evenly distributed between the Lady of the Lake and myself. But I thought that maybe… just maybe… I knew what to do.

I turned back to face her. She watched us, but there was no indication of interest or malice or anything.

Neutral.

Arran was the rational one. He was the calm commander. But that male had deserted him—in this moment, he was not the High King of Annwyn or the Brutal Prince. He was a male, primal, intent on one thing—protecting his mate.

I would have to be the Queen that Annwyn needed.

And I knew the next question I had to ask.

“Is the priestess alive?”

The blue eyes flashed with an emotion I recognized—approval. “No.”

I felt my mate’s devastation. But I couldn’t let it pull me down. I could stand strong. Arran had been so strong for the both of us, for so long. I could do this for the male I loved.

“Am I the queen from the Void Prophecy?”

“Yes.”

I expected my blood to turn cold—for my veins to fill with dread. But something else was lighting inside of me.

Purpose.

“And the succubus… it is the shadow?”

I knew the answer. Before she said it, her eyes changed, just slightly. In a way that I recognized—from the mirror.

“Yes,” she said.

“What about the Ethereal Prophecy?”

She was already shaking her head—as I’d expected. But she surprised me, even so.

“Avalon is neutral. I can confirm what you already know, but no more.”
