This couldn’t be. It was nearly two weeks’ travel from Baylaur to this coastline.
Impossible.
But there was nowhere else in the world where the sea lay still, without a single wave to break its crystalline surface. Nowhere else but the cursed Split Sea.

No, no, no.That was even more impossible.
I had to get up. Wherever I was, I couldn’t remain exposed on the shore like this. I was armed only with my brother’s gargantuan sword. It would slow me down, when speed was my main advantage. I couldn’t wait here for some enemy to find me, alone and exposed.
I clenched my core muscles once again, dragging one leg up out of the sucking sand.
But when I planted my foot, the world spun away again.

The word pounded in my head, in my soul. Its staccato beat was all I could hear or make sense of. Three hundred years of battlefield training melted away to nothing.
