“At least you listen sometimes,” he said, placing the cup on the nightstand. He leaned over me, pushing the camisole up again to reveal the cut on my stomach, which had started to sting. “Next time, leave your fucking armour on when I tell you to.”

“Are you always like this?” I threw my arms up over my head.

“What? Logical? Intelligent? I’d like to fucking hope so.” His fingers traced underneath the cut, and his eyes flashed up to my face as I quivered under his touch. “Sorry, am I eliciting some unwelcome feelings?”

“No.” I rolled on to my side, facing him. “I wish you could sleep with me.”

His eyes widened with surprise. “I beg your pardon?”

I shook my head quickly. Gods, I really was tired. “No, I don’t mean - oh fuck.” I threw myself onto my back as Rook chuckled. “I just mean, I sleep better when someone is in the bed with me. I haven’t slept alone in a long time.”

“Ah.” He reached over and pushed a strand of hair out of my face. “I understand that. Not that I’ve slept with anyone in a very, very long time.”

“But what about the redhead with the big tits?” I bit my lip to suppress a smile.

“That’s a bit different to sleeping with someone though, wouldn’t you say?” He grinned. “A fuck in the back alley behind the tavern as opposed to sleeping in a bed with a woman you’ve been able to enjoy for hours, well that’s quite a different story.”

“I wouldn’t know.”

He cocked an eyebrow. “I don’t believe that for a moment.”

“Believe it.” I said with a shrug. “I’ve never - well, never…” I trailed off, and he moved closer to me.

“You’re very, very tired if you’re telling me all this.” He leaned on an elbow beside me, his calloused fingers brushing against my cheek.

“Do you really fuck the kitchenmaids behind the tavern?” I asked him.

Rook burst out laughing, those dimples in his cheeks appearing again. “That’s what you want to know is it? You’re rather nosy for an innocent princess.”

“Just because I haven’t done that doesn’t mean I’m innocent.” I wriggled closer to him.

“Well, to answer your question, yes.” He rolled his eyes with a quirk of his lips. “I mean, strictly speaking notbehindthe tavern.Insidethe tavern more accurately.” His blue eyes bored into mine. “But you already knew that.”

“I thought maybe you were just taunting me.”

“Mmmm… you did seem a little taunted.” His fingers traced up and down my back, and I sighed. “Oh you like that, do you?”

I nodded. “Feels nice.”

“I assure you,” he said, his breath warming the shell of my ear, “you have nothing to be jealous of.”

I gazed up at him. “Wasn’t she any good?”

He shrugged. “She was alright. Made a lot of noise.”

“Doesn’t that mean you were good?” I asked, putting my hands against his chest, closing my eyes.

“I suppose it does.” He pulled me tighter against him.

“Would you like to do it again?”

His lips turned up in a smile as he lowered his mouth to my cheek. “Is that an invitation?”

“Might help me sleep better.”

Rook laughed, a deep, pleasing sound that made goosebumps break out over my shoulders. “Mmm, I suppose it might.” He kissed my cheek then, and not just a tender, elusive brush. He pressed those soft lips against my skin, and if I hadn’t been so tired I would have turned my head immediately to try and catch his mouth with my own.

“So, you definitely don’t hate me anymore then, Rook?” My voice became heavy as sleep crept over me.
