She grins and smacks the card against the back of my arm.

A countdown clock appears on the TV screen. Trina straightens.

Matt and Deborah fall over each other laughing as they make their way over to the last chair. Matt sits and pulls Deborah into his lap. They snuggle into each other.

I glance at Trina and roll my eyes.

She puts a hand over her mouth to hide her giggle.

The TV screen flashes, and a question pops up.

What is your husband’s favorite color?

A) Blue

B) Purple

C) Red

D) Yellow

What if someone has a color that isn’t listed? I scramble to flip to the card I need and hold it tight to my chest.

The others do the same.

The screen changes, counting down.

Reveal!

We all flip our cards around. Both Trina and I have chosen A.

Matt and Deborah are on C.

The other two couples chose differing answers, so the point comes down between us and the lovey-dovey couple.

“How do we know if we’re right?” Trina seems delighted to have picked the same answer as me. “You wear blue shirts a lot. I figured it was your favorite.”

I kiss her cheek.

“Trina and Deborah are correct.” A voice booms from the TV.

“Whoa.” I slap a hand to my chest. “Nicholas?”

His laughter sounds distorted. “Cool, huh? A quick note Deborah forgot to mention. We have pre-recorded answers based on information sheets you all filled out before you married. If you’ve forgotten what you answered then and you choose something different now, it will be taken into consideration if you and your spouse still choose the right answer.”

“Good to know,” Trina mutters from the side of her mouth.

“The winner tonight will be treated to a romantic dinner at Paulo’s, the luxurious restaurant known for its flame-seared steak. Now, prepare for the next question.” Nicholas’s voice disappears and the screen changes again.

The next thirty minutes pass in a flurry of laughter...except for Regina and Victor, who don’t get any questions right.

I get three right in a row, and my confidence soars. Trina and I make a pretty good team. I might not have ever asked her these questions, but I’ve come to understand her these last few weeks.
