Gee. Things are that bad. Maybe their make-shift booth isn’t a half-bath.

I gesture to the ladies to come in nice and close like I’m going to reveal a big secret. Three pairs of eyes stare at me in anticipation.

“Have any of you had any major things go wrong in the challenges? For instance, we had a water relay and my jet ski failed. We didn’t beat the timer.”

Regina’s face flashes murder. “Yes!”

I glance over to the guys, and Liam sends me a concerned look. Victor rolls his eyes and waves the men’s attention back to the TV.

I whisper to Regina. “What happened?”

She leans toward me, mirroring my secretive posture. “Well,” her voice is barely audible. “The first incident was minor. We had a cooking challenge, and I swear, someone replaced the sugar with salt." She shakes her head, her eyes reflecting exasperation. “Victor thinks I’m hopeless at baking and didn’t hide his disappointment. But I’m glad to see that side of him early on.” She lifts a palm. “Like who cares if I can’t bake? Store muffins are cheaper than the ingredients to make them.”

I nod, a smile tugging at my lips.

“The next weird thing that happened," Regina’s tone drops, "was during a team-building exercise. They blindfolded me and put me in a maze and gave me a walkie-talkie. Victor stood in the lookout tower and instructed me on how to get out.” Her eyes go wild, and her voice rises in volume. “Well, coincidentally, the walkie-talkies kept fading out. I was stuck in that maze for fifty-minutes. Victor and I were yelling at each other by the end, and I nearly collapsed in a heap of tears. It was awful.”

I wrap an arm around Regina. “That is awful. And I thought we had it bad. No wonder you want to tear each other’s hair out.”

She looks up at me. “Is it that obvious? I can’t stand my husband. Can’t wait for this show to be over.”

I rub her shoulder. “Maybe once the pressure is off, you two can really discover each other. It might end up working out okay.”

Her brows shoot up. “You think so?”

“You’re married now. Might as well give it your best shot.” Gee, I’m such a hypocrite.

“Do you think you and Liam will end up staying together?” Her question is genuine and it’s a fair one to ask.

Flutters rise in my chest. What would it be like to have a future with Liam? I swallow hard. “I hope we do.”

Chapter 17

LIAM

This can’t be real. I read the article again. It’s worse than I thought. The words skating past my eyes turns my skin clammy and cold.
