“You what?!?” Ale stands up abruptly at my confession.

“I’m not going to repeat what I just said,” I tell her through gritted teeth.

“You’re telling me that you kissed my best friend, and you haven’t broken up with your girlfriend.”

I nod, not saying a word. But I cringe at how loud Ale is being.

“Just exclaim it to the world, why don’t you.” I sneer.

“Don’t act all innocent.” She points at me.

“I am not acting innocent. I don’t regret the kiss, but I do feel guilty.”

“So you feel guilty for the kiss?”

“No.”

“So you don’t feel guilty that you have a girlfriend?”

“No,” I reply in frustration.

It’s as if I just committed a murder and Ale is an FBI agent cross-examining me.

“So then what is it?”

“What I told you before you started questioning me.”

“That is not an answer.”

“Yes, it is.”

“No, it’s not, Xavier. Sometimes things come at the wrong time. But even so, kissing someone and not regretting it means that you weren’t thinking about your girlfriend when it happened. It means you didn’t give a fuck, so you kissed Vio.” Her face is filled with that rebellious and angered face she holds quite often when she’s irked.

Ale is always annoyed.

But she has a point. “When I kissed her, I didn’t think of anything but her. In a way, you’re right, but right after, I felt bad that I had betrayed Marrisa, not that I regretted ever kissing Vio. If that makes sense.”

Ale’s eyes look like they are going to pop out of their sockets; she looks like she wants to kill me. “This is my fault in a way.” She sighs. “I’ve wanted you and Vio to get together for so long, yet it’s not going to happen. My actions are going to break Vio again. Fuck!”

“Ale, I promise you that it just happened. Knowing that this situation might hurt her breaks me more than you know.” My eyes are filled with an apology.

“Xavier, I swear to whatever god is above that if you continue this with her and don’t break up with Marrisa, I will strangle you in your sleep. Get it?”

I look up at her in horror. “Got it,” I whisper.

“Why are you going to strangle Xavier in his sleep, ragazza?” Luca walks into my prep room.

It’s the first race of the season, in Bahrain.

I’m scared yet nervous about the car’s performance. Ale and Luca are along with me.

“Xavier has just become your best man for the wedding, not bridesman.” Ale crosses her arms around her chest.

“Let’s not get too rash now,” Luca tells her. He guides her chin towards him with his finger so she’s looking up in his direction.

His gaze is telling her something I can’t quite comprehend.

He kisses her on the lips gently, making her instantly melt in his touch.
