Mark comes back with our waters, setting one in front of Vio and then me. He takes out his notepad again, this time with his pen ready.

“Have you guys decided on what you’re going to eat?” he asks.

We both nod as I gesture for Vio to go first. “I’ll have the sweet and sour pork; I’ve heard it’s good.”

I laugh lightly. “I’ll have the same.”

Chapter41

Xavier

“How did you even find that place?” Vio asks as we walk through the streets of Melbourne.

“I was staying at the hotel right next to it, and all the restaurants were closed. By the time I got back to the hotel, I could eat anything. It was the only place open, so I walked in and found one of the best restaurants in Melbourne.” I shrug.

“I love it when that happens.”

“When what happens?”

“When you just randomly find a place you can call your own discovery rather than a restaurant you found on Yelp.” She gives me another one of her dimpled smiles.

My heart melts at the image.

“Agreed,” I say. We then proceed to walk in silence. The hotel is a few blocks away from where we’re at. The both of us are staying there and it’s a fifteen-minute walk from the restaurant.

Vio starts to walk slower and slower. “Are you okay?” I ask, worried.

She has a match tomorrow.

“I’m sore.” Her expression shows that she’s in pain.

I stop. “Why didn’t you tell me this sooner?”

“Well, what do you expect me to do? It’s not like I can jump and ask you for a piggyback ride.” She snorts, with both her hands on her hips.

I think for a moment, completely disregarding the last part of her words, and then it registers in my brain. I give her a mischievous grin.

“No,” she tells me sternly.

“Yes,” I affirm.

“I’m not going to let you carry me on your back for ten minutes. What if I hurt you before your practice sessions with the car?” Her tone is clearly worried about my well-being.

It’s cute, but not enough for me to back down.

“Get on my back,” I tell her.

“Xavier,” she lets out. I know she’s exhausted.

“You’re exhausted, Vio. You need rest. It’s only ten minutes away. If you get on, we’ll get to the hotel in no time so that I can get you in your bed for a good night’s sleep before your match tomorrow.”

“I can’t.”

“Yes, you can. Now get on my back.” This time my words come out as an order.

“Ugh!” She clearly lost and this is the only time I’m happy about it. “Fine.”

I bend down so she can put her hands on my shoulders.
