I know. I will lose myself. I will forget my plan to leave this place and give in. I can’t do that.

The cage door rattles. Dante stands there in a dark suit and no tie.

“Tanya will take care of you today,” he says, and I sense a touch of… remorse. Something like that before he turns away and leaves me.

As I finish washing up, Tanya comes in, and together with Mateo, we head to the chapel. She is the first woman, other than my doctor, I have seen since I got here. Tanya is Frank’s wife, and Frank is part of Dante’s security team.

I smooth my hands over my wedding dress. It’s truly a beautiful thing. It’s an off-the-shoulder, lace-sleeved dress. It cinches around my waist and flows like a river down to the floor. The sides are also lace, so I can’t wear panties with this dress. It’s simple, elegant, and sexy.

I never thought that much about weddings when I was younger, and it didn’t occur to me in adulthood. I was too busy working my butt off to think of a future with the love of my life. I turn around and look at my back in the mirror. The material pulls over my shoulder blades and curves over my ass. I can imagine Dante looking there, and with the lace-covered slits, he can probably see I’m not wearing panties.

I wonder if that will drive him mad like it’s making me.

The door opens, and Tanya comes in. She’s wearing a powder blue body con dress that hugs her body perfectly.

“We’re ready for you, Serenity,” she says.

Tanya has been very kind to me. She took me shopping and even “stole” Dante’s credit card to pay for it.

“Aren’t you worried about Dante getting mad?” I ask her.

She laughs. “Dante? No. He wants you to look your best, and no one can dress you better than me. He’ll thank me for this.”

Of course, we had a shit-ton of security with us, but Tanya told me to ignore them.

Tanya helps me put on my veil, and my nerves start to sink in. It will be harder to get away from him if we’re married. I thought about running like a bride with cold feet, but there’s more security here than at his mansion. I pass so many men with guns, and there’s probably even more outside of this chapel.

The air is different, too. Everyone is more tense. It was the same tone when we went shopping. Everyone is on high alert as if they’re waiting for something to go wrong. Maybe they think I’m going to run, so they’re tense.

Tanya takes my arm and we leave the changing room. Because my father isn’t here to give me away, Tanya said she would. I like that it’s her. The rest of the guys make me tense. I noticed that when one of Dante’s men, Vance, I think his name, touched my arm, Dante gave him the death stare. He pulled his hand away from me as if my skin burned him.

And my body responds to it. Being protected like that. The “touch her and die” vibes radiate off of him and it makes my pussy clench and heart flutter.

We walk down the hall and I watch the men in the dark suits. If I ignore them, I can almost believe it’s a “real” wedding. Because when we turn the corner, we’re in the aisle. Dante is standing at the end with Rico and Frank next to him. The officiant is next to Dante. There are a few people standing as witnesses and a woman at the organ ready to play me in. It’s a Vegas wedding but with scary people everywhere.

I stand up straight, take a deep breath, and nod, as ready as I’ll ever be.

The music starts, and I walk down the aisle, my arms wrapped around Tanya’s. Each step feels like I’m getting closer to the edge, and I have to trust Dante not to chuck me over.

Speaking of Dante, his eyes zero in on me, and he pulls his bottom lip between his teeth before releasing it. He’s wearing a dark suit with a white button-up and a tie. His hands are clasped in front of him, and I swear I hear him growl as I step onto the altar.

Dante’s hand wraps around my waist as he pulls me flush to him.

“You ready to become my wife, Bambola?” He leans down and kisses my lips softly.

I gasp in surprise, not by the kiss itself but by how tender it is. He teases my lips open and slides his tongue inside. My hands automatically wrap around his shoulders and grip his jacket. The whole world disappears, and it’s only us. My heart skips a beat, and heat pools between my legs. Suddenly, I feel like I can taste color, and my heart is coming close to the surface. I hadn’t realized until now how close I was to giving in. Every day, I would walk a step closer, only to take two steps back. I thought the drive back from the doctor only two weeks ago was a defining moment of resistance, but I guess I was wrong.

I know what changed. It was the day he came into my room telling me my father had an affair with a mob boss’ wife and that I was in danger. I felt defeated, and for a moment, I wanted to know what it felt like to have Dante’s hands on me. I was very close to dropping to my knees right then. He told me there was more where that came from, but something was still holding me back. The prospect of losing myself. If I’m all I got now, then I can’t lose that.

But still, it lingers in my head. The what-ifs.

I’m unsure if it’s just curiosity or if I’m falling for my captor.

Dante pulls back, and I’m dizzy from the kiss. He gives me a nip on my bottom lip before moving back. Taking my hand, we stand side by side, my lips tingling as the officiant starts.

“Serenity,” the officiant says, “Do you take Dante Giovanni Salvatore to be your husband. In sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live?”

My jaw ticks as Dante smiles down at me as if he’s having the time of his life.
