Mitch stood before her partner as if this were a silly conversation. “Fine. We’ll work up to it, then. I could use some practice.”

“Mitch.”

“What?”

Vanessa needed more heat from her coffee before having this discussion on a foggy afternoon. “I want you to have fun. That’s not going to happen if you’re not ready.”

“Like I said, maybe we need practice. That way you can assess if you think I’m ready.”

I expected her to say as much.Mitch had been ready to go after one month of purposeful abstinence from the scene. While the heat never died down between them as a couple, certain tastes could not be sated only between the two of them in the privacy of their well-equipped bedroom. Mitch had joked about it more than once, and Vanessa knew to take those jokes as half-truths.

“Let’s discuss it later.” Vanessa wrapped both hands around her coffee cup. “You’re about to go on a run.”

Mitch swung her arms over her head, loosening up her shoulders. “Before it starts raining, preferably.”

“Will you be taking a break in the cabin?” Vanessa referred to the one room building in the middle of the woods that had recently been refurbished enough to be used as a rest spot for those making use of the trails.

“I don’t know, Van…” Mitch kicked her foot off the step. “Should I take a break in the cabin?”

“You never know what you might find there.”

Mitch walked backward toward the yard. “Or who.”

“Mmhmm. Or who.”

One last lingering look fell upon Vanessa as Mitch spun around and took off for the woods. Vanessa watched her disappear into the tree line.Suppose I should go get a jacket.Mitch could run for an hour. That should be plenty of time for Vanessa to dress for a stroll through the woods and to await her partner in the cozy cabin.

What they did in there? The kind of thing nobody else had to know about.

THE END
