The basement door swung open. Two pairs of feet came down the carpeted stairs. In front was one of the housemaids in her gray and white uniform carrying a platter of fresh snacks while Candace came down after her, barking more orders before transforming into the sweet and nice hostess for everyone else.

“I’ll be right back, darlings.” Candace flipped her hair behind her shoulder while waiting for the maid to present the fresh vegetables. What Mitch didn’t expect was the slight bow the maid gave before returning to the stairs. She followed Candace out of the basement.

“Anyway…” Freida grabbed some water to go with her wine. She waggled her eyebrows at Mitch on her way to the loveseat, where Vanessa still had space to entertain another new friend. “If you’re here, that must mean you’re ready to put on a show, right? You know that every newbie in this circle has to get hazed.”

Mitch placed her hand on Freida’s arm before she had the chance to make her great escape. She immediately halted. You’re too easy, Freida.Mitch would have been amused if other things didn’t press on her mind. That’s the real reason you could never be my Domme.

“Nobody likes a good hazing more than me,” Mitch said, “but what do you mean?”

Freida lowered her voice. “Guess she didn’t tell you.”

Was Mitch annoyed that her old acquaintance wouldn’t tell her more? Only because she would have worn one of her wigs if she knew she was putting on a show for Candace Lister before the night was over. Then again…she did like what she saw the other day… and I wasn’t wearing a wig.

Practically perfect, wasn’t it?

Mitch did not encroach on the territory her Mistress now commanded on her loveseat. Instead, Mitch took her perch against the wall, careful not to stand like the bodyguard she sometimes moonlighted as.Can I help it if it’s the most natural pose to select? If she wasn’t on all fours, anyway.

Candace returned down the stairs, alone.

Vanessa’s voice rang through the air as she answered someone’s question about how she bought her “delightful” house on the outskirts of town. Candace stood behind everyone else, pretending that she was riveted in the conversation when in reality her attention was squared solely on Mitch, who was aware that the hostess of this interesting show only had eyes forher.

She kept her cool when Candace gradually stepped around the crowd and approached her against the wall. She smelled bittersweet, like wormwood and vanilla. A pungently dangerous warning that Mitch shouldn’t take her lightly.

“Your partner knows how to charm people, I see,” Candace said lowly enough to not distract from the main conversation. “Yet you’re the one that oozes the most appeal tonight.”

Mitch finally sipped her sparkling water. “Is that so? Quite the compliment coming from you. I hear you’re one of the most charming women in town.”

“Flattery is not necessary when I’m already intrigued by you, Miss Michelle.”

“What intrigues you about me?” Mitch strategically placed her small glass against her collarbone, where condensation dripped down her skin before disappearing into the bust of her dress. “I’m not as mysterious as you may have heard.”

“Yet there are so many urban legends about you already.” Candace crossed her arms. “I hear you single-handedly took down five grown men to save your girlfriend’s life.”

Mitch dipped her middle finger into her water before lightly tapping it against her bottom lip. “Seven, actually. Amazing what adrenaline can do.”

“You are not a woman to be underestimated, this much is clear.”

“I’m sure you’ve heard other ridiculous stories about me. Like how I was in the Marines. A POW, actually. You don’t meet those every day.”

“Not at your height.”

Mitch almost laughed. Nobody had told her that Candace Lister wasfunny.“My height never works against me. If anything, people underestimate me, and that works in my favor.”

“I am not underestimating you, Michelle.” Candace turned on a seductive smile that would have worked on a naïve girl who wasn’t used to these types who were barely sociopaths in disguise. “I’m discreetly flirting with you.”

“Trust me, it’s not discreet.”

“Will you tell your Mistress on me? I would truly despise to hear that I’ve already soured this relationship with you two.”

“Luckily for you, Vanessa doesn’t like to be flirted with by anyone but me, so you’re teasing the right woman.”

“If I didn’t know any better, I’d say that the rumors about you are entirely true – you like to be flirted with by everyone.”

“Noteveryone. There has been the occasional sorry sod who tried it and got the coldest shoulder they ever encountered.”

“Good thing I don’t feel a frost over my skin.”

“You would know, yes.”
