“Absolutely wild. In my world, we call that a ‘bad day.’ I can’t imagine having the energy to ruin someone else’s life so easily.”

Yet I’m sure you do it all the time.Perspective was often lost on the women who could afford Mitch’s time.

“Do you love her?” Violet asked. “Vanessa.”

“More than anyone else I’ve met, could meet, or will meet.”

Cool temperament eased over Mitch’s leg as Violet finally touched her shin. “Then why are youhere?”

“Because, like you so astutely noticed, I enjoyed my time at the Summit. Vanessa enjoyed it, too.”

“Some people said that you had an unfair advantage because you spent your time between official performancesminglinga little too well with the other attendees. Perhaps I should be jealous that I spent most of my time with a headache instead of discovering for myself how much you enjoy being the town pony. I didn’t even get one of your infamous kisses.”

“Now’s your chance, isn’t it?”

Violet’s grip tightened on Mitch’s shin. “If Vanessa came here with you… maybe.” She put down her vape and stretched that arm over her head. The whole length of Violet’s body reached the table where Mitch had left the expensive corset. “But you came with my godmother, which means I cannot ethically accept your offer to fuck my brains out, as much as it pains me.”

Mitch’s brows did all the talking.

“I don’t know why this Vanessa, if she loves you so much, is ‘loaning’ you out to my godmother. Any thrill out of what she makes you do can’t be worth it in the long run. Besides, I’ve never heard of her taking on another woman’s ‘pet’ for her own gain. Candace likes women who have subservience baked into them out of necessity, not desire. Surely, you’ve noticed that.”

“It may be on my radar.”

“Besides, I’m suspicious of anyone who gifts their godchildren escorts for their birthdays once they turn eighteen. Do I look like my brother? Jesus.”

“She’s been doing this a long time, huh?”

“Since before I was born.”

This is exactly why I’m here.Between Irene, the kind of client Candace courted, and now Violet, her own godchild, Mitch drank from the fountain of invaluable information. “You don’t sound like you approve of what she does.”

“Look, I’m not turning my nose at women who are making an honest living, but everyone in my family knows that you don’t strike a deal with ‘Aunt Candy’ unless you’re willing to pay her back on time. I hope you don’t owe her any money.”

“Quite the contrary. She’s paying me.”

“Good. Keep it that way.”

Mitch gently slid her shin away from Violet’s grasp. “I’ve picked up a certain vibe from the people around her.”

“You’re exactly her type.”

“I know.”

It was clear that Violet wasn’t a threat. She was as interested in hurting Mitch as she was getting a full-time job in corporate America. Nevertheless, Mitch created a bigger gap between them as she decided to sit cross-legged and cover her torso with one of the larger pillows digging into her side.At least I’m not fighting for my life with someone else. This could have gone a lot worse, and already Mitch regretted calling Vanessa in a panic.

After half an hour, Violet dozed off with her arm hanging over the edge of her pillow pile. Mitch stealthily got up and put her clothes back on. The corset wasn’t the easiest to lace by herself, but she did the bare minimum to keep it latched to her torso as she slipped out of Violet’s suite and followed the hallway back to the VVIP room where some new faces had appeared – and old ones disappeared.

But Candace was there, and that was who Mitch was looking for.

“I take it they’re pleased?”

Mitch sat with her on the couch. “Your goddaughter had no complaints.”

“Violet, huh? I should have guessed. You’re the exact kind of girl to lift her spirits.”

Don’t call me a “girl.”Candace didn’t have that privilege, not that Mitch could say anything and maintain her undercover demeanor. So far, Candace had no real complaints about the cooperative plant in her midst… if Mitch didn’t count getting slapped for insubordination.

Which she did.
