“You’re in my house,” Mitch asserted, as if she had to remind the woman in front of her. “This is my domain. I get to call them like I see them, and I think you’re attracted to me.”

“If any other woman talked to me like that, I’d be offended.”

“I don’t offend you. Because it’s true.”

“Michelle, darling…” Candace sighed. “You’re mixing up my professional attention for affection. It happens. I’m simply glad you already have a Mistress who can attractyourattention back. Besides, I’ve seen how she satisfies you. You don’t need me.”

“You know what Vanessa and I like to do,” Mitch kept pushing, “why have you never arranged something between you and me?” She only picked up her teacup to have something to linger on her lips. “I’d give you the deepest discount I’d ever given anyone.”

The self-satisfied smirk on Candace’s face was the first inclination that Mitch was getting to her. The other was the twirl of a foot encased in ankle-high boots. “I don’t pay, Michelle. Iget paid, like your Mistress. If I wanted you, as you seem so insistent on, I’d have you already. It’s not like it would be difficult for me to seduce you into my dungeon if that’s what I truly desired.”

“You’re not interested in many women, it seems.”

“I’ve been disappointed so much in my life that I’ve found it easier to turn off certain parts of myself. Instead, I focus on transforming my eye for talent into a lucrative career. I know how to make people feel comfortable and ensure they have a good time, be it a jazz lounge or my private club full of women like you prancing around naked with her hand between her legs.”

I don’t recall that happening. It was a nice picture, though. “I’m sure Vanessa and I will be available on the 23rd. Nothing else for the rest of the year, right?”

“No, I’m flying to Thailand for the holidays. I have another… well, I have contacts there I need to meet with, and there’s a wonderful resort that’s perfect for unwinding.” Candace finished her cup of tea and did not take Mitch up on her offer to pour some more. “Are you upset to hear that I’m not interested in you?”

Mitch shrugged. “Far from upset. Maybe a bit disappointed.”

“Does it bruise your ego?”

“I have no ego to bruise, Ms. Lister. I live for every day one at a time and go with a flow that even I barely understand. Believe it or not, I think we’d have a lot of fun together. Maybe I could reawaken certain parts of you.”

Mitch did not enjoy playing this dangerous game, but she had to admit that there was a ring of truth to her comments.Come on. Say you want me.Mitch rarely met a woman like Vanessa – or Candace – who could say no to her for long. Even if they weren’t interested in sleeping with her, they would at least bestow upon Mitch a fleeting look of longing. Mitch lived for that look in women. It was a connection to kindred spirits she never knew she needed until she rejoined the real world with Vanessa by her side.

“You really are something else.” Candace uncrossed her legs. “I don’t believe I’ve ever met a woman like you before, Michelle. Let alone a woman of your predilections.”

“I know who I am and am comfortable with that. Hell, I embrace it. It’s unfortunate that not as many other women do.”

“I’ve met thousands of women in my life who aren’t too different from you. I’ve trained a lot of them myself. The Candace Lister brand, if it were.”

“Not a single one made you happy?”

Candace sucked in her cheeks. “No.”

“That’s too bad.”

Candace offered to leave shortly after that. As Mitch showed her out and promised to talk things over with Vanessa, Maria followed under the guise of waiting for her orders.

“I don’t like that woman,” she candidly told Mitch once the door was shut again. “Don’t ask me to not tell Ms. Richards about her visit.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll do it myself.” Mitch headed toward the stairs. “Tell Vanessa I’m taking a nap when she gets home. I probably won’t be back down until dinner.”

What she didn’t tell Maria – because it was none of her business – was that Mitch fully intended to be waiting for Vanessa, naked. Something about Candace always got her in the mood for her Mistress’s delicious punishments.

Chapter 20

Vanessadidn’tnormallybringwork to bed. Yet the moment she retired from the den, where she watched a show that her friends declared was “the best of the ages,” she received a push notification fromForbesabout one of her golden stocks stepping onto a sinking ship.

Instead of possibly waking up the next morning to even worse news, Vanessa sat up in bed, reading glasses on and a large tablet in her lap. Mitch was in the shower and about to brush her teeth. Vanessa had turned off the TV in their bedroom so she could better do the calculations necessary to see if some of her clients’ portfolios needed to dump this stocktonight.

Naturally, she was distracted when Mitch stepped out of the bathroom wearing nothing.

“Air drying tonight, are we?” Vanessa fully enjoyed the view when her partner bent over in front of her dresser and rooted for a shirt to wear to bed. Someone had shaved, and there was everything for God to see. And Vanessa.Don’t leave me out.

Mitch stood up with the sleeves of her shirt already on her arms. “It’s the best way.”
