“Luna…”

“Just tell me.”

Sean sighed. “The problem with some of these reporters is that you can’t always sift through what’s fact from fiction. I mean, they get a lead on a possible story, and they run it with a caveat. Even if it’s not true.”

“And some of those stories were?” I pressed.

“Anything from allegations of him being a playboy, to having secret children, to knowingly putting innocent people behind bars.” My gut clenched. “One article even shared a wild accusation made against Hunter stemming from when he was a kid. The family’s lawyers sued for defamation over it.”

“What claim?”

“It was bullshit. It came from some former housekeeper who lost her job after Hunter’s dad was murdered and they downsized the staff. She claims she overheard some kind of confession that Hunter made.”

“A confession.”

“It was ridiculous. Police even checked out the woman’s claim before it was ultimately dismissed. And the family won the defamation suit.”

I turned my head toward the window, whispering into the phone again.

“So, tell me what this so-called confession was if it was so ridiculous. Even if it’s not true, as his girlfriend, it would help me understand what he’s been through and what he’s been accused of.”

“Luna…”

“You know I’m not going to believe accusations just because someone made them. So, just tell me, what was it?”

Sean hesitated, and after a few seconds, he said, “There was a rumor that he was the one who killed his dad.”

“He was nine.”

“Exactly. He wouldn’t have the physical strength to take down a man of that size, which is why it was beyond ridiculous. My point is, no one has uncovered anything earth-shattering about this guy that proved to be true, even after all that investigating. So, as much as I hate the dude, don’t let fear be the reason you break up with him. Break up with him because he’s a dickwad.”

I rolled my eyes.

“You know what this is actually about, don’t you?”

“Do tell,” I said.

“The hard part about trusting someone completely is that it opens you up to potential heartbreak. Again, don’t get me wrong. I would love nothing more than for you to leave his ass in the wind, but life is going to deal you a million reasons to start doubting people. And if you do that, you’ll wind up miserable.”

I sighed. He was right.

I watched as we turned toward Michigan Avenue, all the pedestrians walking along happily, like they were going to have the best day of their lives. Not spend it worrying about what bombshell their boyfriend was about to drop.

“Thanks, Sean.”

His voice turned playful. “Let’s say, hypothetically, he’s going to tell you he’s totally broke. Wouldn’t that be a tragedy?”

I smirked. “Okay. I’m almost to the office, so I should probably let you go.”

“All that being said, if he does break your heart, I’ll end him.”

I rolled my eyes again. “Do you want to have lunch today?”

My offer slipped out before I could think. It’s funny how you go your whole life not worrying that Franco Hopkins or one of his paid goons is about to jump out from around the corner and cut you in half with a hatchet.

“I can’t,” Sean said. “I’m actually out of town.”

“Really?”
