“Appears so, sir.”

How did she manage that?

Because she’s smart as hell, Hunter. She wouldn’t let herself get taken without a way to call for help.

With a frustrated growl, I pushed off him and shoved a hand through my hair as the rage inside me mixed with an icy terror.

“Where the hell are they taking her?”

And what were they going to do to her once they got there?

CHAPTER50

Luna

Pain smashing into my cheekbone pulled me from the abyss of darkness. It took me a moment to stretch my eyelids open, a light blinding them as a blurry figure in front of me crystallized into a solid form.

“Wake up, bitch,” he said.

My gaze traveled from his black shoes and slacks up to his black button-down shirt before staring into the eyes of Franco Hopkins. Smirking, sucking on a toothpick between his teeth.

Several more seconds dragged on while memories flooded back of being chased through the streets of Chicago, crashing, and my bodyguards losing their lives simply for trying to keep me safe.

All so Franco Hopkins could abduct me and what, kill me?

No.

If he wanted to kill me, he would have done that at the crash scene.

The question was, how long did I have until he did kill me? And how could I get myself out of this?

A lone metal chair pressed against my back, creaking slightly as my gaze swept through the vast expanse of what seemed to be an abandoned warehouse. The air was heavy with the pungent scent of damp wood and rusted metal, subtly mixed with the lingering odor of mold and mildew. The echo of water dripping from a leaky roof reverberated throughout the space, creating an eerie and unsettling soundtrack.

A pair of harsh, incandescent lamps pierced the thick darkness, casting long, distorted shadows on the concrete floor. The intense light rays revealed the faint traces of dust particles floating in the air, creating an almost-surreal backdrop to whatever Franco and his men intended to do here.

Three mysterious male figures stood in front of that light, their postures exuding an air of menace and authority. It took a moment for my eyes to adjust to the lighting, to recognize them as the men who had relentlessly pursued us through the city streets.

They stood with rifles draped across their front while my arms were wrenched behind my back, bound by what felt like duct tape.

“Luna Payne,” Franco said.

God, what I wouldn’t give to shove that toothpick into his eyeball. In fact, all I wanted to do was slap that look off his face and knee him in his groin for killing those bodyguards, for the hell he’d put me through. But I couldn’t. Even if I wasn’t tied up, I needed to be smart here.

It was four armed men against me. In a big-ass warehouse with nowhere to run and hide from flying bullets.

And even if by some miracle I made it out of this room, I had no idea how many other guards might be positioned outside, let alone where this warehouse was located. I didn’t even know how long I had been unconscious. Had I been here for minutes? Days?

I was most likely screwed. But so help me, I would keep fighting with every cell of my being.

No matter how doomed it might be.

Even if that fight was purely psychological—playing nice to try to negotiate a release.

“What do you want?” I asked.

Franco smirked, and pulled that gross toothpick out from between his lips.

“You and I are going to have a little chat.”
