“Why would Franco thinkshehas it?” the Vigilante pressed. “I’m the one that killed his cousin.”

“Dominic and Franco were fighting for months before he died, and Franco threatened him. Dom said if anything happened to him, he’d turn evidence into the cops that would put him away for life.” The assailant nodded toward me. “Dominictold Francoshewas the one he’d give it to. She was with Dom when he died, so he figures he gave it to her.”

“Even if that were true, why would he think she hasn’t turned it over to the police yet?”

Great point.

“If she turned it over, he’d be in jail by now. So, he figures she still has it.”

“Why would she sit on the evidence?”

“Because everyone’s too scared to go against Franco, man.”

“And he sent you here,” the Vigilante clarified.

“He’d staked out her place, was going to confront her there, but it’s surrounded by cameras or whatever, so he did some digging and found out her dad is an inmate and that she visits him most weekends. Told me to come here and see if she showed.”

“He thinks she’ll waltz around with a USB drive?”

No answer.

The Vigilante’s back straightened. “If she’s taken out, she can’t give it to anyone, right?”

The assailant’s ugly lips curled into a snarl.

“I recognize you,” the Vigilante said. “You’re Anthony Pike, yeah?”

The assailant’s eyes darted to me, then back to the Vigilante.

“You’ve killed two women. That I know of.”

No denial. It seemed to take the Vigilante a few seconds to recalibrate.

“Where the hell is Franco?” he asked.

Anthony licked his lips, grimacing from the pain of his oozing cheek. “He moves around. Contacts us with burners he changes out.”

“So, you have no way to reach him.”

“No.”

“Then how were you going to tell him that you took care of this?”

“He callsme, okay? Not the other way around.”

The Vigilante twisted the knife in his hand, silent for several seconds before pointing its blade at Anthony’s nose. “Then here’s what’s going to happen. You’re going to come with me. And when Franco calls, you tell him you eliminated her.”

Anthony’s eyes widened slightly. “He’ll find out she’s alive, and when he does…” He shook his head.

The Vigilante bit his lip. “Then you tell him you need to meet. Let me handle him.”

“The hell I will.”

“You seem to be under the impression you have any options here. You do as I say, or I slit your throat.”

“You seem to be under the impression killing me is the worst option on the table. Anyone that goes against Franco? Will spenddaysgetting tortured before he finally puts them out of their misery.”

The men stared at each other.
