Luna Payne could have been killed. When she’d come out of the prison, I’d followed her too far back. I kept my distance so she wouldn’t spot me, but that careful decision nearly cost Luna her life. It had taken me too many seconds to get to her.

And don’t get me started on that goddamned imbecile Franco Hopkins, thinking Luna had the USB drive to begin with. Dominic’s attack was as violent as it was swift. The guy never had the chance for a deathbed confession. Let alone to surrender evidence.

And even if he had, Luna would have turned it over to the cops. Immediately. The woman might exacerbate me by defending assholes for a living, but she wouldn’t protect a killer by illegally harboring his evidence.

An unnerving fog clung to me, refusing to let go because the attack at the prison meant Franco had dug into Luna deep enough to find out her old man was in jail. And that she visited him regularly. He positioned a guy here to watch for her and was brazen enough to kill a person outside an armed prison.

Another reason this left me on edge was because, for the first time, I’d killed someone outside of my ritual.

I methodically researched my targets long before they took their last breath.

But I couldn’t think about that right now; something far more urgent weighed on my mind. Franco Hopkins was about to find out that one of his underlings had been killed.

A death he might blame Luna for. Him thinking she had evidence was bad enough and my fault.

Even though it was supposed to be my only chance to get to him, it was foolish to take Dominic out in such a public place in the light of day where being discovered was a possibility. My failure put Luna in a precarious position with Franco, a danger that landed directly on my shoulders. The only way to make this right was by ensuring her safety.

I had never used my skills to keep a single person alive before.

But Luna Payne was about to become the exception…

CHAPTER18

Luna

“Where the hell are you?” Hunter asked.

Maybe this was a bad idea. But I couldn’t ask Sean to come pick me up, seeing as how I’d borrowed his van. And my stupid car was broken. An Uber from Joliet to Chicago would cost approximately three billion dollars, and I hadn’t brought cash for public transportation, so what was a girl to do?

But why did Hunter sound so hostile?

“Is that how you answer every phone call? Your manners need some TLC.”

“You didn’t tell me you were leaving.”

I rolled my eyes.

“Didn’t realize you were under the misconception I’d actually comply with your demand to notify you of my whereabouts. Besides, I thought you were spying on me. Didn’t you see me leave?”

“If I could stare at security monitors twenty-four-seven, I would, but my security team works in shifts to keep an eye out for danger. Seems we had a misunderstanding. Not just to notify me of a break-in, but anytime you left.”

“So, youareinvading my privacy by keeping tabs on me.”

“Your life might be in danger.”

I frowned, looking at the van, hating that he was right. “Yeah, about that. Listen, you want the good news or the bad news first?”

“Luna, so help me, tell me what the hell is going on.”

“Bad news, someone, uh…”Stay away from words likeattacked, almost killed.“Entangled me in a bit of a confrontation.”

Silence. I swear, I couldhearhis anger trying to stab my ear through the lack of any sound.

“Good news,” I continued, “Franco’s minion is dead.”

Silence. For two more breaths.

“Franco’s guy is dead?”
