“To repair it, they have to replace damaged pistons, valves, and cylinder heads. Plus, the water pump and tensioner to prevent future issues.”

Yikes.

“Total estimate is $2,675.”

Damn.

“I’m going to pay it,” Hunter insisted.

“No.”

“Luna.”

“You’re not paying for it,” I retorted. “And as for the repair, I want to think it over. I might pay that just to have another thing break next month, so I have to decide if I’m going to invest the money trying to limp this thing along or use that money as a down payment on a new car.”

“I can buy you—”

“Hunter.” I raised my hand up. “I really appreciate the offer, but I’ll figure this out on my own.”

He stared at me, fidgeting with his fingers for a moment before relenting with a nod.

“As for the incident today,” he started, “if anything else happens, you’re coming to live here.”

CHAPTER20

Hunter

Inever wanted that kiss to end. I wanted to undress her and suck on her breasts and make her my own. But I wasn’t just awestruck by her beauty.

Her feisty personality performed a hostile takeover of my thoughts.

I’d heard about Luna Payne long before I’d formally introduced myself to her. Not just her name on the tenant agreement—I’d heard about the rising star in the public defender’s office and found myself mesmerized by what people were saying about her. Intelligence was always a turn-on. Hard work was another, but passion?

Passion was something I rarely came across in my career. I found most people seemed to be going through the motions in life, navigating into a career path that fit them best, but when I’d heard that Luna was so passionate about her work that she shaped her entire life around it—even turned down jobs that would pay her far more—well, the pull began.

When I met her, my attraction only intensified. Especially after seeing her in action, impressed with how she commanded the courtroom.

It was impossible to not be enamored by her contradictions. Brave enough to fight off a killer but terrified of a needle poke. I loved how defiantly stubborn and independent she was. Every aspect of her was a perfectly crafted puzzle piece, molded together to shape the most fascinating woman I’d ever met.

And after tasting her mouth? All I wanted to do was taste it again…

I rubbed the back of my neck as I glanced out the window, taking in the sight of my cottage. Everything around me belonged to me, save for that which I wanted most dearly.

“It’s almost Shakespearean, isn’t it?” I asked Grayson.

He had popped over unannounced again just as Luna left, and we were both currently sipping one of my single malt liquors, watching her walk toward her cottage. Slowly, like the fresh air was helping her nerves.

“How so?”

I sighed heavily. “For the first time, I feel something for a woman. But she has trust issues too big to ever give me a chance.”

Grayson took a sip of his drink, the clink of his ice cubes hitting his glass. “So, earn her trust. Fight for it.”

I shook my head despairingly. “That’s where the Shakespearean part comes in.”

She could have told me a million reasons we couldn’t try this, but only one had the power to make me step back on my heels: that she might run away.

“People I love tend to leave.” Mom and Dad didn’t want to leave us, of course, but the footprint of their absence left its mark on my soul all the same. “If she walked away from me…” I shook my head. “She’s so terrified of being betrayed that she’s one blink away from running. How can I get close to someone who’s such a flight risk?”
