Part of my heart bloomed, realizing he’d escorted me to a guest room rather than his bedroom, perhaps in an effort to respect my boundaries.

“You need to calm down.”

“After what just happened, you think I’ll calm down? You could have been home when he broke in.” His voice filled the room like thunderous clouds as each word carried immense rage. He stepped toward me, closing the already-tight space between us, his eyes burning with anger and desire.

“But I wasn’t,” I managed.

“You could’ve been killed,” he muttered through clenched teeth.

“They broke in during business hours when they knew I’d be at work.” I wasn’t trying to defend the guy—I just wanted Hunter to settle down.

He clutched my chin, and despite the gentleness of his touch, it caused me to gasp. His anger transformed into something else—something more passionate—as he moved so close, that our noses almost touched. His chest heaving with a blend of vengeance and lust.

“Hunter…”

“Let me make this abundantly clear.” His hot breath danced across my lips. “You willallowme to protect you.”

His eyes were blazing with an unexpected, intense desire, sending a flood of warmth through my body.

Because I sensed that behind his anger, desperation and fear pulsed through every cell of his body. He had already lost two people he cared deeply for and had been powerless to stop it. And now, he was not about to sit back and allow anything to happen to someone else. Not on his watch.

His fierce protection made my skin tingle and ignited a fire in my lower belly.

Ever since that night on the hood of his car, I hadn’t been able to stop thinking about our encounter—the way his hands explored my body, the heat of his breath on my skin, the smell of his cologne, his mouth pleasuring me. But mostly, how the rest of the world simply faded away, how nothing else mattered, except the two of us in that moment.

Even after he left my side, his presence lingered on my skin like a ghost that I didn’t want to shake off. It all had a captivating effect on me, leaving me thirsty for more.

I wanted to be completely consumed by him. I fantasized about feeling his weight on top of me as he filled me with his passion.

And now I felt like he could read my soul, see the desire that brewed inside of me, begging to be claimed by him in a way that no one else ever could match.

He let go of my chin and took a step back, yanking at the knot of his tie.

With a fierce determination in his eyes, he loosened it, his gaze never leaving mine. And then, with one swift motion, he yanked it off and hurled it to the ground—leaving me breathless and yearning for more.

The fire in my belly became an inferno as I watched him slide off his tailored jacket, revealing the tight fit of his linen shirt clinging to his muscular frame. He began to unbutton it angrily as he stared at me with a raw sexual tension that flirted with fury.

“You will allow me to keep you safe,” Hunter growled.

My life had been full of disappointment and heartbreak for as long as I could recall. I felt like I was walking in the dark with no one to guide me or be my anchor amid a never-ending storm. Then, suddenly, Hunter appeared out of nowhere, standing up to all the dangers that threatened me, without any expectations or demand for recognition. In the midst of despair, it was as though a light had been switched on in the darkness of my life, illuminating a path forward, bringing hope and possibility back into view. Every fiber of my being was drawn to him, and I couldn’t stop this growing sense of gratitude, admiration, and something else…

Trust.

I was beginning to trust Hunter Lockwood.

He tossed his shirt to the ground, unzipped his pants, and threw them to the side.

And then, wearing nothing but a pair of dark gray boxer briefs that strained against his desire, Hunter stalked forward…

CHAPTER35

Luna

My heart pounded in my chest, my breath coming in short, ragged pants.

Hunter grabbed my lower back, pulled me toward him, and crashed his lips to mine with a passion that was both violent and tender.

Everything else in the world faded to black, and all that mattered was the taste of his lips and the pressure of his body against mine.
