“They’re beautiful,” Sam smiled. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” Aero handed over the flowers and held up the bag in his other hand. “Dinner?”

Sam giggled. She felt a bit foolish, but her heart was pattering, her face was flushed, and she couldn’t help but smile. Shaking off her giddiness at Aero’s romantic display, she let him in, and he set the bag on the dining table.

“Molly’s gone for the night,” Sam said, stepping up beside Aero. She gazed up into his green eyes, which held something that she’d never seen before. It made her shiver.

“Good,” Aero murmured, reaching out and pulling Sam into his arms.

Instinctively, she wrapped her arms around his middle and hugged him, resting her head on his chest. Aero didn’t react negatively; he just tightened his hold on her and kissed the top of her head.

Sam grinned at the progress, listening to the beat of his heart through his t-shirt.

They stood like that for several minutes, just holding each other.

“Do you wanna sit on the couch and eat?” Sam asked, tilting her face to look up at him. “I usually do. It’s more comfortable.”

Aero agreed but did not release her. He gazed down at Sam, his eyes roving over her face. She was lovely, her round face offset by her almond-shaped eyes and soft pink lips.

“You’re beautiful,” he said gruffly, watching every colored fleck in her hazel eyes reflect in the warm lamplight.

Sam blushed, glancing away from him shyly. “Thank you.”

Aero cleared his throat and reluctantly released her.

“Here.” He handed her the bag of food. “I’ll get silverware and stuff.”

Sam wanted to offer to do it, to remind him that he didn’t know where anything was, but she realized before speaking that he was making himself at home. She liked that a lot.

“Okay,” she smiled, taking the bag over to the couch and setting the food out on the coffee table. She flicked on the television, turned on a music channel, and turned the volume down so it played softly in the background.

Looking over at Aero, she watched his back as he moved around her kitchen, opening and closing drawers and cabinets. Sam stifled a laugh, grinning again at his efforts.

He eventually emerged with two full wine glasses, two forks, two spoons, and a roll of paper towels.

Sam arched a brow as he placed everything on the table.

“I couldn’t find napkins.” He shrugged, and Sam chuckled.

“It’s fine. Thank you for bringing dinner,” she said as he sat beside her.

“Anytime,” he said, handing her a glass of wine.

“How was your day?”

“I finished the front doors today. They have a camera-phone system now, so they can only be unlocked from the front office or if someone has a key card.”

“So I’m locked out of the building?” Sam asked.

Aero chuckled. “Yeah, I suppose so. They should be giving out the new cards on Monday.”

They lapsed into a comfortable silence while they ate and drank their wine.

Aero, remembering what he told Byrd, turned to Sam and asked, “What’s your middle name?”

Sam coughed. She hadn’t expected the question and swallowed her wine too fast.

Aero looked at her with concern, reaching out to pat her lightly on the back. It wasn’t listed in the information he’d looked up about her, and he was curious.
