For the first time in a long time, I shifted without being in total control. It was like my wolf responded to our mate’s command and there was nothing I could do to stop it.

There was no danger, I wasn’t going to hurt my mate, I was just responding to his request. Normally I would have removed my clothes rather than being wrapped in them as I shifted. As it was, I ripped my shirt. Thankfully my pants seemed to fall away as the shift happened.

Christopher gasped, and when I looked at him, it was through my wolf eyes. The color was different, but my vision was sharper.

“You’re beautiful,” he gasped. “Did I make you shift so fast?”

I nodded my massive wolf head. I stepped toward him slowly, not wanting to startle him.

He dropped to his knees in the snow and opened his arms. I walked closer. I was taller than him in this position. He wrapped his arms around my neck and buried his nose in my fur.

My tail wagged, like I was a dog. I couldn’t stop it. I never imagined I’d have my mate like this and that it would be Christopher.

“You’re magnificent, mate.”

I whined and nuzzled closer to him. I felt his tears, and if I was in my human form, I’d have some of my own.

We sat there for a long while, holding each other.

Chapter Ten

Christopher

Nicholas’wolfwonmyheart. Not that I expected anything else. He was part of Nicholas. Leaving the property hadn’t been easy and had it been the middle of summer, we’d probably have stayed there the whole night. But the weather was getting colder, the wind picking up, and we needed to get into someplace warm for what I had in mind to do next.

The hotel I’d stayed at wasn’t what you would call fancy or even nice. But it was private, had a room available this close to Christmas, and wasn’t going to break the bank. Best of all, it abutted the woods and that made it quieter than many other places in town.

“You’re back,” the desk clerk said. “Did you forget something in your room?”

“No. I was hoping I could get it back for another couple of nights?”

She sat up straight. “Family.” She sighed and shook her head. “I totally get it. I can hook you up and can probably get you the coupon rate. Let me see if I can find one.”

She got up and went to the cabinet behind her, taking out her purse and digging around. “Bingo!”

The woman came back waving a paper coupon. “I cut these out of the expiring travel booklets before they got recycled. No reason people should pay full rate on this dump if they don’t have to.”

It was fair to say she wasn’t the owner.

“I appreciate it,” I said.

We finished checking in and got our keys—which were actual keys and not those digital ones like most hotels had. It was like stepping into a time warp or something.

“This is nice.” Nicholas dropped the duffel bag we shared onto the floor. “I was expecting it to be different based on the—”

I didn’t let him finish his sentence. I’d been waiting to kiss him—really kiss him for too long. I refused to wait any longer. My lips were on his, my arms around his waist, holding him against me before he could even blink.

“I guess we can talk later,” he mumbled against my lips and brought his hand around, holding my head as he deepened the kiss.

I loved how he took control. Even though I initiated the kiss and I wanted it badly, he set the pace, he moved my body in the best way.

I pressed against his body, hugging him to me as his lips danced with mine. His shirt was already untucked, and I was able to pull it off him without much effort. While our lips were disconnected, we removed all of our clothes.

I shivered, not from nerves, but because the room was quite cold.

“Come here,” Nicholas said.

He didn’t have to tell me twice.
