I took a deep breath and held his hand. “My parents had their eye on that property for years. It’s not a bad place for young pups to be. When I texted my mom that I wanted it for us, she got the paperwork put together to put in a formal offer. Apparently the real estate agent doesn’t understand how holidays work.”

“This is amazing.. How can we afford this?”

I shrugged. “Well, we both have good jobs. My parents are willing to help if we need it, but I don’t think we will. I know I should have talked with you about this, since it is a very big step. And if you want to live somewhere else—”

“No. I love it. I love you. I want to be there. I’m just in a shock.”

My heart melted. “I love you, too.” I pressed a kiss to his cheek.

“I have something for you too. I don’t know what it is, but your mom gave it to me before we left.” He picked up the gift bag I had noticed earlier, but hadn’t asked about. I assumed my mom had given him socks or something.

He handed it to me.

“She told me to have it you open it when we were alone.”

I stiffened. “Did my mom give us a sex toy?”

He barked out a laugh. “I don’t think so. Just open it.”

I reached inside and pulled out a stack of envelopes, about three inches thick. Christopher’s eyes widened when he saw them, and he grabbed them from my hand.

“Are those…?”

“All the letters. Every one,” he said in awe.

We spent the rest of the night in each other’s arms, reading through his letters one by one.

Chapter Sixteen

Christopher

It was closing day. There was a shit ton of paperwork to clear before we could actually buy the place, and a few times we thought it might fall through, but today was finally the day and I was thrilled. There was still a long way to go before we could actually move to the property, but this was a first step and a huge one.

I was able to keep my job and turn it into a remote position. Nicholas found a new position closer to here. Everything was falling into place beautifully. But if that was the case, why did my stomach feel like crap? This nervous belly had me wondering if there was something big I was missing. If maybe we shouldn’t buy a place that required so much work and instead should build on his family’s land like they had offered him.

Or maybe we should just get a house in a subdivision to start?

Having a house with a ton of land and a big ass barn was a huge step for us. I wanted it. So much. But were we ready?

“Are you ready?” Nicholas asked.

We were in our short term rental. It wasn’t much as far as space went. Working from home was more like working from the kitchen counter than anything resembling an office. But it worked for now, and it was only temporary.

“Yeah. Let’s go claim our future.” I started towards him, my stomach lurched, and I bolted to the bathroom, barely making it in time.

When I stood up from my place of worship at the porcelain gods, my mate was standing there with a cup of water in one hand and a wet washcloth in the other. That wasn’t odd. He was a caring person. Of course he would want to help me when I was sick. The odd part was that he was wearing the largest smile I ever did see.

“You think this is funny? I’m so nervous about this closing that I’m throwing up.” Even as I whispered the words, they sounded wrong. Nicholas would never wallow in my misery. That wasn’t who was, now or ever. This… this was something different.

“No. I’m happy. So very happy.” His words didn’t make sense, but both of our phone alarms went off, so I cleaned up as best as I could and we drove to the law office where the closing was taking place.

“I’ll stay here, and maybe they can run out the paperwork I need to sign. I don’t want to get anyone sick.” I’d have stayed home if it weren’t such a monumental day. I assumed it was nerves that were making my stomach roll, but just in case it was a stomach bug, I didn’t want to infect anyone else.

“It’s not contagious,” he said with confidence, and I looked his way.

“How do you know? We ate the same thing last night. It for sure isn’t food poisoning or we’d both have it.” Or maybe shifters were immune. He did heal faster than me.
