But no matter what new trinkets I came home with, Archer never seemed to mind.

“Hey, baby. You on your way?”

“I just left. Sorry, I lost track of time.”

“Don’t worry, it doesn’t matter if you’re late.”

Today was the first time I was doing a therapy session with Archer and Callie. He’d continued to work with her, and the improvements had been noticeable. He was less closed off, and the nightmares only came once or twice a week.

They’d probably stay with him for the rest of his life, but Callie thought they would almost disappear if he kept working on it.

“I love you.”

“Love you too. See you when you get here.”

We hung up, and the dopey smile on my face stayed firmly in place until I turned onto our street. Then it turned into a blinding smile.

My heart sped up like it did whenever I pulled into my parking spot. No matter how much time we spent together, every time Archer and I were apart, I couldn’t wait to see him again.

Rushing up the stairs to our apartment, I made it to the door and unlocked it. Archer’s deep voice sounded from the living room.

Not for the first time, I thought I was the luckiest girl alive to get to come home to him every night.

His face lit up as soon as I came around the corner, and he held up his hand. “There she is,” he said into the screen. “Just a sec, Callie.”

He met me halfway and swept me into his arms, then kissed me as if he hadn’t seen me in weeks instead of hours.

We sat down on the couch together, getting as close as we could without me sitting in his lap. I twisted the engagement ring Archer had given me two months ago around my finger. I was always touching it, as if to reassure myself that it hadn’t all been a dream.

“Thea, how are you? Nice to see you again.”

I’d met Callie a few times, but today was our first official session. “Hi, Callie. I’m good. Excited for our session.”

She laughed and nodded. “Me too. Just remember that it’s not an exam. There are no wrong answers. And you can talk as much or as little as you like.”

“Sounds good.”

Archer took my hand, and we got started.

I didn’t think I’d ever get to a place where I was as comfortable with another person as I was with Archer. But he showed me every day how much I meant to him. Nearly getting killed turned out to be the best thing that had ever happened to me. Without it, I wouldn’t have reconnected with him.

Sometimes even the wrong decisions led you on the right path.
