It was done.

Moving quickly, I found my Sunshine in the clubhouse’s kitchen tying her brother’s sneakers.

“But Remi said I could have cake.”

“Not right now, Jax. Hold still. I need to tie your other shoe.”

“We need to go, Sunshine,” I said, reaching for her hand. I noticed that both had already changed into something more comfortable for traveling.

She looked up at me and nodded. “We’re ready.”

Not wasting another minute, all three of us left the clubhouse, sticking close to the tree line as brothers and guests celebrated the union of her sister and the club president. I spotted Bullseye across the compound, talking with his sister. They looked to be arguing when I saw something that didn’t belong.

“We need to hurry,” I whispered, just as Jax tripped. Scooping him up, I ran with him in my arms, my Sunshine right behind me as we disappeared into the surrounding trees. I knew we were still too close to what was about to happen.

I saw the shadows making their way towards the celebration.

We were running out of time.

“Run,” I barely said, as I heard the first shot echo through the air.

“Was that a...” Sunny asked, looking over her shoulder, slowing down.

Grabbing her hand, I didn’t give her a choice as I forced her to keep running. I needed to get her and her brother to safety.

If the Society found them... No. I refused to think that.

Never.

No one would ever touch my sunshine.

Chapter Seven

Sunny

Upon opening my eyes, I found myself still immersed in darkness. Sitting up, I could still feel the twinge of pain, although it was less severe. I still had no clue about my whereabouts, but as I scanned the expansive open area, the darkness appeared slightly less intense.

Could the fog finally be lifting?

I missed my family. My daughter. My Solomon.

I knew he had to be worried. He never strayed far from me or Soleil. Not that I minded. I loved having him around. Everything felt complete with him. That nothing could hurt us.

I still didn’t know what brought me to this place, and that worried me. If I didn’t know where I was, then how was Solomon going to find me?

“Momma got a boo-boo?”I heard my daughter’s angelic voice. Looking around, I yelled. “Soleil! I’m here, baby. Where are you?”

“I miss momma.”

“I do too, baby. I do to.”

Miss me?

I was right here.

Couldn’t they see me?

“SOLOMON! SOLEIL!” I shouted into the ether. “I’m right here!”
