“Where did I leave off? I know. Remember our first Christmas, Sunny...”

Life was different here.

I didn’t know what it was, but I felt free. There was no worry here. No assholes were trying to hurt us. No threat of death lurking in the shadows. In fact, there weren’t any shadows here. Everything was so bright and beautiful. None more than my Sunshine.

She blossomed in the sun. Smiled all the time, even in her sleep.

I knew it was wrong, but I couldn’t stop myself from sneaking into her room and watching. I knew she was safe.

Both of them were.

I kept my promise. They were happy.

With Sunny’s help, we got Jax back in school. I thought for sure the kid would balk about returning, but he was excited and within a few days, the kid made loads of friends who were eager to teach him how to surf. Jax tried to get me to join but I just shook my head.

I was good at watching.

Sitting in the sand, I kept my eyes on Jax as a few of his buddies instructed him on the rules and safety measures for boogie boarding. It looked rather simple to me, but what did I know? I made sure before he went near the water, he put on his life jacket. I heard what Sunny said at the airport. No way was I allowing her brother to drown on my watch. I was happy when Jax’s friends agreed with me and when each of them held up their own vest.

“Why are you sitting out here alone?” Sunny asked, sitting next to me.

“He’s with his friends.”

“So?”

“He doesn’t want me intruding.”

“Solomon,” my Sunshine whispered. “Jax loves you. He would love it if you were out there with him.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know how to swim.”

“You never learned?”

I shook my head.

“Do you want to learn?”

I shrugged my shoulders.

“I could teach you. If you want to learn.”

I looked at her and asked, “You would teach me?”

She smiled brightly. “Of course. But first, we need to get you some board shorts, T-shirts and flip-flops. You can’t learn to swim in jeans and riding boots. We can go tomorrow after we drop Jax off at school.”

I nodded. “How are your classes?”

“Good. I like online learning rather than the classroom. I can concentrate better and devote more time to my studies. All of my classes transferred, so I didn’t lose too much time. I’ll still be able to graduate in the spring.”

“What are you going to do, then?”

She shrugged. “Haven’t decided yet, but I’m leaning towards taking a few months off. To relax and enjoy myself.”

“Your sister wanted you to go to college. Have you picked one?”
