“Why?”

“Because children are honest. Adults lie.”

“Children can lie too, Logic.”

“True, but when they lie, there is some element of truth in their words that I can work with.”

Getting to my feet, I said, “Thank you for talking with me. I think I will get some rest.”

“Good night, Sunny.”

A hand over my mouth startled me as my body froze in fear. Snapping my eyes open, I tried to scream out, when I heard, “Sunny. It’s me.”

I blinked a few times as I tried to get my breathing under control, I stared into Reaper’s eyes as he slowly moved his hand away from my mouth.

Confused and shocked, I looked up at him.

“I need your help.”

“Is he with you?”

Reaper nodded.

Flinging back the covers, I hurriedly got out of bed, reaching for my robe. “Where is he?”

“Out back. He refuses to come inside.”

“Take me to him.”

Quietly, I followed Reaper downstairs and out the back door of the house, to find Solomon standing near the tree line watching everything, covered in blood from head to toe. His beautiful blonde hair was matted with dried blood. Wearing the same clothes as the last time I saw him, he looked barely recognizable as I slowly approached him. When he looked up at me, I stopped dead in my tracks, for all I recognized was his soft blue eyes set against the white of his eyes which were now hardened stone. There was no life, no laughter in them.

Just death.

Total, indisputable death.

In that second, I knew I was about to meet the Sandman for the very first time.

“Solomon?”

Observing my every move, the man standing in front of me tilted his head to the side, his eyes never leaving mine, as I took slow and deliberate steps toward him.

With a deliberate and careful approach, I raised my hands, taking my time so as not to startle him. As far as I could ascertain, he didn’t seem to be injured, but I couldn’t be completely certain until I had the chance to clean him up. He looked thinner. Almost as if he hadn’t had a good meal in weeks.

“Sunny, I don’t think...” Bullseye said, stepping out of the darkness along with several other brothers as I kept moving towards the man I loved. The moment Solomon moved away from the tree line, his instincts kicked in and he became alert. It was at that precise moment when I heard the distinct sound of a gun being cocked.

“Sunny, don’t move,” Hawk growled from another side, gun pointed at his son as Indigo and Logic protected their president. I could perceive through my peripheral vision, the men making deliberate movements to strategically enclose Solomon.

“He won’t hurt me,” I whispered, keeping my eyes on him. This was my husband. Faced with his brokenness, fear, and torment, I chose to stand by his side, refusing to walk away during his time of greatest need.

“You sure about that?” Wraith asked, slowly reaching for his weapon.

“Sweetheart, remember what we talked about?” Logic asked as Solomon growled lowly but loudly, as it echoed all around.

No one moved.

“Wouldn’t call her that,” Reaper chuckled. “Not if you want to live to see the sunrise.”

“Not helping, asshole,” Bullseye sneered as I took another step closer.
