“I was eight years old. Well, I think I was eight. I don’t know my birthdate. He was angry because I tried to kill him that day. Cassie and Jess tried to stop him from taking me, but he was stronger. In the end, he won. He always did.”

Fumbling with my fingers, I continued, “When he took me to the clubhouse, he threw me in a room. I don’t know how long I was there before he returned, but I remember my stomach hurt badly. He liked to hit me a lot. He was so mad at me. He called me all kinds of names. Made fun of me because I didn’t talk. Sometimes, he would take me downstairs and hit me in front of the others. They laughed. Even the women. I hated it there, but I didn’t know where to go. I couldn’t remember how to get back to Cassie and Jess. I was older when he came into my room drunk one night. I could smell the beer on him. It made me sick to my stomach. He always smelled of beer and tobacco. He had beaten me the night before. I still hurt and hid in my closet. But he found me. There was nowhere else to hide. He was angry when he found me and threw me on my bed. When I looked into his eyes, I saw something that scared me so much I pissed myself. I knew he had found a new way to hurt me. And I was right. Because that night he raped me. Every night after, he came into my room. He beat me, made fun of me, called me all kinds of names and then he would fuck me. Sometimes, he would bring the brothers and they would watch or join in. When I turned sixteen, he forced me downstairs in the common room. Everyone was drunk, getting high, fucking anything with a hole. Brothers were fucking brothers and women. Others were jacking off, watching, laughing, and when Toxic forced me to bend over a table, ripping my pants down, I heard a woman scream out. My eyes landed on her. Three brothers were raping her, forcing her against her will. She didn’t look much older than me and when she begged me to help her, something inside me snapped. I don’t know why I chose that moment to fight back, but when the fog cleared and I saw what I did, I promised myself that no one would ever touch me again. I was about to kill Toxic when I heard her crying. Instead of killing Toxic, I helped her. I found her something to wear, stole several of the brothers’ wallets, and told her to run. She did. When the dust settled, seven brothers lay dead. I left the next day when James Doherty arrived. I never looked back.”

I could hear a pin drop as I finished telling her my truth.

I couldn’t even hear the wind through the surrounding trees as my heart pounded in my chest, waiting for her condemnation.

But it never came.

Instead, she asked, “What was the girl’s name?”

“Ivy,” I whispered. “She was only fourteen. She told me that much. I sent her away with a bunch of wallets and told her to never look back. I shouldn’t have done that. She needed my help and when I finally left, I didn’t know how to find her. All I knew was her name. That and she had a burn mark in the shape of a pitchfork seared into her shoulder blade.”

“If you are worried about her, ask Phantom to find her. I know it’s not a lot to go on, but if anyone can find her, Phantom can.”

“Sunny,” I whispered, unable to look at her. I hid my face from her, not wanting her to see the lone tear that escaped. “I’m sorry about our baby. If I had only done better.”

She took a deep breath, reaching for my hand as her other caressed my face. “I’m sorry too, honey. I wanted our baby so much, but it wasn’t meant to be. We can’t dwell on what ifs. All we can do is love what we have and move on. There will be another baby for us. I believe that. In the meantime, we need to mourn the one we lost and find a way to move on.”

“How do we do that?”

My sunshine smiled warmly. “One day at a time.”

Chapter Thirty-Six

Sandman

Sitting on the front porch, I sat next to Reaper as we watched Sunny and Wraith run around, chasing Soleil and Jesse. She looked so happy. Free. She hadn’t mentioned our talk in the treehouse, and I wondered if I scared her away. It wasn’t every day Sunny learned her husband was sexually and physically abused until they forced him to kill my tormentors.

Not that I would change a damn thing.

As far as I was concerned, those bastards got off easy.

The club brothers were keeping their distance, and I didn’t know if it was because of me or Reaper.

Not that I cared.

I didn’t want to talk to anyone anyway. But from a few of the looks I saw brothers giving Reaper, I was pretty sure they were mad at him.

Reaper whispered as he stared at his son, “Emma’s still refusing to talk to me. She won’t even let me near her. I walk into a room, and she leaves.”

“What did you expect?” I replied as Soleil tackled Jesse to the ground. “She just got her dad back and then her mother takes her away. Kid’s gonna be angry.”

“I fucked everything up.”

I nodded. “Yeah. But you are here now and can fix it.”

“Bullseye gave me the letter Remi left. I called Dakota. He has no idea where she’s at. Can’t find her anywhere and Phantom flat out told me to fuck off when I asked her to look.”

“Sunny told me Valhalla and the Nyght Nymphs helped her disappear.”

“Fucking great,” he growled, before sighing. “How are you handling Soleil being related to Wraith?”

I shrugged.

“Doesn’t matter now. Can’t change it.”

“Sunny seems okay with it.”
