"Never mind," I waved my hand. "You said you had a plan on how to cripple them."

"I do." She crossed her arms over her chest, emphasizing theI.

"Just tell me what to do."

"No."

"Nyck?" I repeated.

She shook her head.

"Chrissy, you said you would—"

"Talk to them first," she reminded me of the part I chose to ignore.

"I will not allow you to—"

The side of her right lip rose in sync with her right eyebrow when she interrupted me. "You will not allow me?" Her tone was scathing.

"Damn right, kallini, I will not allow you to put yourself in danger," I pressed my point.

"You have no authority toallowme to do anything," she spat.

"You aremyprisoner," I reminded her.

"We're supposed to work together,"sheremindedme.

Furiously, we stared at each other, neither of us willing to give an inch.

"Fine, you will take me to your FOB, and we'll take it from there," I finally conceded.

"I need to talk to my people first," Chrissy said in a softer voice. "I need to find out if they betrayed me or not."

"They led you into a trap," I reiterated.

"Wethinkthey led me into a trap. We don'tknow," she argued.

Again, we stared at each other, neither one of us willing to concede.

"Alright, let's talk about this again once we're closer to the FOB," Chrissy harrumphed.

"Fine," I grunted.

Itwasnearlypitchblack when we reached the land of the Vandalls and Kendryx found a secluded spot down a small river that fed into the Dark Sea.

"How do you find your way here?" I asked, having seen no navigational instruments whatsoever.

Kendryx pointed up at the myriad of stars. "You just have to know how to read them."

"They change every night," I pointed out. The planet rotated, slower than Earth, but the night sky still constantly changed.

Gently, he took my head and pointed it at a larger bright star that shone almost green. "That's Rhodos, his position is fixed, but the smaller stars around it," I noticed a bright yellow and deeper red one, "those move. Depending on the span of my fingers, I can always tell where we are or which direction we need to go."

I shook my head. I thought of myself as a highly intelligent woman, but reading stars? Sky maps? Maybe after a few years… that thought filled me with dread and something akin to happiness. Dread because I had no idea what the future would bring or if I would even still be on Thyre, alive or dead, and happiness, because the idea of still being with Kendryx in a few years filled me with it.

"Are you cold?" he asked before we left the ship.

He had offered his pelts to me many times, and this time, I took him up on one to wind around me, to keep my head and fingers warm, which was about all that was susceptible to the cold. My uniform didn't stain, rip, or allow my body to experience any adverse temperatures, unfortunately, it couldn't do anything about the parts of me that were exposed to the elements, like my head and hands.
