Only a lone woman sat behind a desk filled with monitors. With wide eyes and her mouth forming an O, she stared at me in horror.

"Get away from… the desk… put your weapon on… the ground," I pressed out between moans as speaking hurt more than breathing.

Thankfully, she didn't resist, and her lips moved in an attempt to speak to me, but fear must have been choking her and no sound came out.

"I won't harm you," I assured her. "Step back into the corner." I indicated which with the barrel of my gun. "Stay there."

My eyes searched the room until I found a panel with what seemed like hundreds of wires coming out of it. Without hesitation, I unloaded my gun into it, setting off a spray of sparks, turning all the monitors hanging off the walls blank, and the woman in the corner screamed and jolted.

Before the last monitor died, I caught a glimpse of the screen that made my heart jump inside my chest. Kendryx. Somehow, he had managed to get into the base and was now sneaking around the corner of one of the Humvee hangars. I had a pretty good idea where he was headed and cursed but couldn't help a flutter in my stomach. He was here! He came for me!

I should have been annoyed at him for not trusting me, but the thought that he cared enough about me to risk his life held more weight and made me almost jittery.

For good measure, I grabbed the female soldier's gun on my way out. A quick glimpse at the three soldiers in the hallway told me two were still out, while the third was moaning on the ground, slowly coming to. But slowly enough for me to get away.

With the cameras out, I had no problem making it to the elevator, but that's when I realized my mistake. My access code didn't work any longer. With a loud course and calling myself all kinds of names, I retraced my steps until I found the first, still moaning man on the ground.

I hunched down next to him, pulled him up by his lapel and hissed, "Get up."

His eyelashes fluttered and I shook him a bit harder. When he was ready to fully come to, I grabbed my gun and stuck it in his face. "Up!"

Still groggy and not really comprehending what was happening, I more dragged him along than anything until we were back to the elevators.

"Who… what?" he tried to regain his senses.

I used his palm to call the elevator before I hit him hard against his temple with the butt of the gun. He slumped down like a bag of flour and I trained my weapon on the opening elevator doors just in case it was occupied.

It wasn't.

With one last, somewhat guilt ridden, glance at the unconscious soldier, I pushed the G for ground level, before thinking better of it and hitting the emergency brake again. Cameras or not, they would be waiting for me on the ground level. That's where I would position my soldiers if I were the one on the hunt.

This time, it took me four attempts before I made it up through the hatch on top of the elevator car. My side smarted from the bullet that hit me, and I wondered if the impact had cracked or bruised a rib. Not for the first time I marveled at my uniform. The material was thin and light, yet strong enough to stop a nine-millimeter bullet. If I ran into somebody with a machine gun or rifle, I wouldn't be this lucky. There was only so much the uniform could protect me from.

Climbing up the ladder was just as much torture, and I had to stop and take a few deep breaths before I made it to the next maintenance shaft. But that wasn't my destination this time. I kept going until I reached the second floor. There, I pried the doors apart with my knife and snuck a peek over the floor's rim.

The hallway was empty. Most of the soldiers after me would be on the ground floor to prevent me from leaving the building.

I only hoped my glimpse of Kendryx had been enough to tell me which path he would take, otherwise it would complicate things.

The second floor was where the civilians bunked. Workers like engineers and scientists. Regular soldiers were on the third level and officers and Confederation dignitaries on the fourth and top floor.

I picked a room at random and jimmied the door open. The room I entered was spartan, similar to where I had stayed during my time here, except this one didn't have its own bathroom, which didn't matter to me. All I needed was the window opening to the Humvee garages where I had last seen Kendryx. Hoping he had kept his cautious pace, I opened the window and leaned out, searching the shadows left and right for his tall frame.

I didn't have to wait long.

"Kendryx," I hissed.

Theskinontheback of my neck prickled as if a thousand eyes were on me. Despite keeping to the shadows and against walls, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched.

Quick glances at the guards in the towers above showed that none of them were turned in my direction, most were glued to where I could see the glow of a fire over the wall surrounding us. But if they weren't the source of this nagging sensation at the back of my head, what was?

As a warrior, I had long ago learned to trust my instincts, yet here in these alien surroundings, I felt ill at ease and unprepared.

"Kendryx," the sweetest voice hissed at me, and I leaned my head back to find Chrissy.

She grinned at me from the window above. "Catch me."

She gave me just enough time to sheath my sword and open my arms before she wiggled her long legs and her delicious ass out the open window, followed by the rest of her body.
