I readjusted my hold and moved it carefully back and forward, while his eyebrow lifted. Apparently, he hadn't thought I would be able to hold the sword up, let alone wield it. I would need to train my muscles, but I was convinced that I would eventually learn to handle it.

I stepped back and moved the blade a few times through the air while he watched me carefully. After a few moments, he stepped behind me. He placed one hand around my waist, planting his palm on my stomach, causing me to inhale sharply at the intimate touch that warmed me to my core despite the cold weather.

His other hand gripped my hand holding the blade as he aligned his much longer arm with mine and guided it through the air. He mimicked a cutting motion by swinging our arms in an arc and stabbed at the air.

Sweat poured down my forehead, my biceps and lower arm muscles screamed in pain, but I would have rather died than show him a sign of weakness.

I wasn't sure how long we did this little dance, probably no more than fifteen minutes, but when he took his sword back, he smiled appreciatively at me and gave me a nod, telling me that I had impressed him.

"Will you teach me?"

He must have guessed my question because he nodded again. Then he sheathed his sword and crouched down to take care of the fish I had all but forgotten.

I stooped down across from him, observing him no matter how disgusting it was watching him take the fish's scales off before he gutted the hapless creature. He threw the innards over the railing and waved me to follow him back down, where, over the brazier, he pulled up a contraption that seemed to have been made to roast whatever unlucky creature turned into dinner for the night.

I would be lying had I said that my mouth wasn't beginning to water at the sweet aroma rising into the air.

Standard fare in the Terran Confederation consisted of nutrition bars, protein shakes, and freeze-dried crackers. Every once in a while, I had eaten a fruit or vegetable, but those occasions were rare enough that I could count them on two hands. Food for the Vandalls and Thyres was entirely different, as I had quickly learned. Even as King Uthar's prisoner, I had been eating better than in my entire life. Not to mention the fare on Alahna and Brogan's table.

I had nearly orgasmed the first time I took a bite of one of the bread rolls, it had been that good. Topped with a sweet jelly and honeyed butter, I truly thought I'd died and gone to heaven.

So even though I had never eaten anything that had been alive a few minutes earlier, hell, I had never even seen an animal before I came to Thyre, I didn't feel squeamish whatsoever when Kendryx cut a piece of fish meat off and offered it to me.

I didn't know what kind of fish it was, but it tasted delicious, and Kendryx seemed to enjoy feeding me as he cut another piece off for me and then another. I gestured for him to take a bite, but he shook his head stubbornly and waited until I was full, which was kind of sweet, and he grew on me just a little bit.

When we finished eating, we went back on deck, and I followed his lead of filling buckets with seawater to rinse the planks of the fish blood and whatever other parts he might not have scooped up.

It amazed me how we glided over the waves and how unconcerned he seemed with staying by the helm, but when my eyes moved from one end of the horizon to the other, I didn't see anything that could have posed any kind of danger to us and figured he knew these waters. Still, I felt somewhat uneasy and wished I had had the words to talk to him about it.

The sun was lowering behind us, and darkness slowly approached. Curious, I lifted my head to stare up at the leisurely awakening stars.

I still hadn't fully accustomed to their sight. Earth was too polluted to see the stars at night even after years of humans slowly dying out. Enough of us remained to continue poisoning the once beautiful world.

Being on Thyre now and witnessing this everyday miracle made me fear we were about to do the same thing to this planet. And I wondered which side I would take even if it turned out the Terran Confederation hadn't duped me. How much was the survival of humankind worth when compared to that of an entire world? And what would humankind do to that world and its inhabitants if they survived?

I had never been much of a philosopher, but those questions bothered me more than ever as I stood on the deck of this ship in the middle of an ocean larger than any on Earth, staring at the sky while in the company of a very sexy man I couldn't talk to.

I wondered if I was being selfish in my philosophizing. It was easy damning others when I was here, safe, with my belly full of good food that hadn't been artificially enhanced and produced.

Kendryx stepped next to me, and as if it was the most natural thing in the world, he placed his arm around my waist, and I laid my head against his shoulder as we both gazed up at the darkening sky filling with myriads of stars.

"Kenduczi," Kendryx said hoarsely.

"Beautiful," I whispered, guessing the meaning of his word, only he wasn't staring at the sky any longer; he was staring at me, and for the first time in my life, my heart hitched. Literally hitched. It felt as if it plopped over, or somersaulted, whatever it was, it made my knees go weak, and my knees don't weaken easily.

But his eyes. Oh God, his eyes. They were so deep and dark, as if he was drinking me in.

StaringatChrissywaslike diving into a deep, green pool. All day long, I fought my baser urges to bend her over the ship's railing and fuck her senseless. It was the hardest when she swung my sword; by the gods, she was a sight to behold.

Her tight white uniform didn't leave much to the imagination. It put her long legs on full display as well as her luscious ass, an ass that begged to be cupped, kneaded, slapped.

Her waist was so slim, I could encircle it with both of my hands with room to spare, and then there were those tits sitting high above a tight abdomen. Fleshy, generous tits that begged me to expose them every time my eyes fell on them.

Long red hair spilled down to the middle of her back, a length I could only guess at from stray strands coming loose because she mostly kept it in a tight bun at the back of her head.

From the moment she had entered Brogan's great hall, I had been unable to keep my eyes off her. Seeing her made me forget everything, even my bloodthirst to avenge my brother.

"Chrissy." I wasn't going to ask her; she wouldn't have understood my question anyway, and I was tired of holding myself back. I simply pulled her closer, and when she rose on her tiptoes and tilted her head back, that was all the invitation I needed to crush my lips to hers.
