When she slid down his front, he all but groaned, his cock rising to attention. Why with Olivia did it seem to have a mind of its own?

Once she stepped back to the stove, he pulled out plates and poured them each a cup of coffee. Suddenly his phone rang and he was shocked that someone had managed to get through.

Before he answered, he stared down at his phone in surprise. “Good morning, Beth, Merry Christmas. How are you weathering the storm?”

Why in the world had she chosen now to call him? Why? It had been over a year since they had spoken. And he didn’t need her to screw things up with Olivia.

“I’m calling to invite you to Christmas dinner, if you can get out,” she said.

“Well, thank you,” he said, knowing he would never accept her invitation. Even if he’d been alone. “But I have plans.”

“Oh,” she said. “Or are you just being stubborn?”

Yes, he was being very stubborn where she was concerned. She’d walked out of his life and he would never accept her back in. Never.

He walked away so Olivia wouldn’t hear him. “No, I’m not being stubborn. I have plans.”

No, he didn’t. But a thought had been forming in his head about taking Olivia home to her family and meeting her parents. There was so much he wanted with her and the first thing was to meet her family and see their interaction and ask her father for her hand in marriage. Yes, that was quick, but he didn’t care. Olivia was who he wanted.

He was certain.

“Look, I made a mistake with you and I was hoping that we could talk things out. My family wanted you to spend Christmas with us. I want you to spend Christmas with me,” she said her voice catching.

Was she joking? They would never get back together. It wasn’t possible after how she’d left him in his darkest moment. And now Olivia was here and he was falling in love with her.

“It’s been a year, Beth,” he said. “A terrible year. You left me alone during the worst year of my life.”

“You’re right,” she said. “I just couldn’t deal with seeing you grieve so much.”

“They were my parents. What did you expect?”

There was a moment of silence. “You’re right. I was wrong. I’ve missed you.”

A few days ago, this might have worked on him, but not now. Not with Olivia here. Not with the way he felt about the sweet woman cooking him breakfast. And maybe they wouldn’t work out, but something was telling him Olivia was the one for him and he was listening to his intuition.

Olivia would never understand this phone call.

“Beth, there is someone new in my life. I wish you the best of luck.”

She started to cry. “Lucas, I’m sorry.”

“Maybe it wasn’t meant to be,” he said, thinking of Olivia, her sapphire eyes sparkling with passion for him. The way she laughed and the way she had cried the night he’d rescued her.

“Me too, Beth. Merry Christmas,” he said and disconnected the call. When he turned around Olivia was standing there a frown on her face, tears in her eyes.

“You have a girlfriend and you’re cheating on her with me,” she said. “I’m going to go pack my bags. I knew this couldn’t be this good.”

Stunned, he stared as she whirled around and walked out of the kitchen and down the hall.

Damn Beth. Damn her timing. And damn her for making Olivia suspicious. He was not a cheater and he never would be.

CHAPTER12

Once again Olivia felt crushed. Utterly defeated.

What was it with men that they couldn’t keep from cheating?

Her suitcase lay on the bed and she started throwing her toiletries in it. What was she going to do? Outside, the snow was still coming down hard, and yet she had to get out of here.
