“That sounds like an excellent plan. I know just the place.”

We were exiting the rink when I heard the sound of crashing and a large disruption coming from the building.

“Jacob McCullough! You keep your hands off of her!” Bruno was charging over to us, and he looked thunderous. There was a look in his eyes that made me do a double take. This did not look like my brother.

I pushed Millie behind me and heard the other patrons making a run for it. “Bruno, you need to calm down. Millie is with me. We discussed this last night. You didn’t say a word to me, you just up and left.”

“This is your brother?” Millie asked, and I just nodded.

“That’s because you thought the bet was done. I haven’t heard from Millie herself saying anything about you. She’s been doting on me! I’ve taken her out on proper dates, whereas I heard you took her to meet Denis and she ended up jumping off the cliff into freezing cold water. I’m surprised she didn’t freeze.”

“I’m standing right here, boys!” Millie said, trying to get around me, but I pushed her back.

I heard her huff, but I didn’t care. I could see in Bruno’s eyes that he was already half gone. “Millie, I need you to go inside. Stay behind me as I walk. Don’t get in between Bruno and me.”

“But this is all a misunderstanding. I can explain if you two would just listen to me!” she cried.

“Millie,” I growled, which I instantly regretted, because I felt a wave of fear rush through her.

“She’s scared of you,” Bruno said, sneering.

I looked back at Bruno, my whole body on alert in case he pounced. “How did you even know we were here? Are you following us? And today is my day. We agreed last night that we’d each get one more date.”

“One more date? What is this? Did you two bet on me?” Millie asked.

I groaned and shook my head. This was not how it was supposed to go.

“Suzy told me you were going to propose to her today,” he said.

I could see his eyes changing, and I panicked. “How can you believe Suzy? You know her as well as I do. She will do anything to get to me.”

“And yet she told the truth about you two being here right now. The way you were holding hands and laughing, I would think you already proposed.”

Millie’s anger was washing over me in waves. I didn’t know how I could hold out any longer. Between Bruno’s rage, Millie’s anger, and my fear that Bruno would hurt her if he came after me, I was discombobulated.

What was Suzy up to this time? Bruno’s eyes were glowing yellow now. I knew what was about to happen, and Millie could get really hurt. Worst of all, she would find out who I really was. “Millie, I need you to go into the building now!”

“No! I don’t know what’s going on here, but I’m not leaving your side.”

“Millie!” But I didn’t get to say any more as right then Bruno shifted, and a big gray wolf with a black muzzle came shooting across the snow at me. I heard Millie scream, and I shifted just in time for Bruno to knock me over.

We rolled over and over in the snow, bites raining all over my body wherever Bruno could get at me. I tore at his skin with my claws and tried to put my mouth around his neck, but he was so erratic. This was nothing like the fighting Dad had trained us with. Bruno was all over the place. Every time I thought I’d predicted his next move, I would feel another claw rake across my face, my chest, or my back.

Then a new sensation took over. I felt something clamp around my neck, and next thing I knew, Bruno was pulled off of me and I was being held down by multiple strong hands. I looked up through the blood that was covering my eyes and saw what looked like Dredge staring down at me.

I thought I heard him say, “This has gone on long enough,” before I fell unconscious.

Millie

“Millie, what is going on?”Lira asked for the hundredth time. She was pacing back and forth in front of me, and I wanted to scream at her to stop, but I couldn’t find my voice.

I had lost it when I saw Bruno and Jacob turn into wolves and begin attacking each other and had screamed till my voice was hoarse. I hadn’t moved until Luc flung me in his arms and carried me into the building. Once inside, I bolted, and he didn’t stop me. I ran to my car and drove like a mad woman all the way home, locking myself in my apartment.

Lira came in later that night to find me sitting on the living room sofa, staring into the empty fireplace.

“You’re scaring me, Millie. You haven’t even moved an eyeball since I’ve been home.”

I couldn’t say anything. I didn’t know how to anymore. What I saw—all that blood!—I couldn’t even process it.
