A few of the pack whimpered and Dad realized what he had done and lifted his power over us before continuing to speak. “I took a much larger dose of the tonic than any of you put together, and the cure Miti has will only taper the changes in me, therefore, it’s time for me to step down. It was time anyways, as my son and his mate are more than capable of taking over.” He looked over at Luc, who nodded. “It’s a time of change in our pack, and we should take advantage of it. You need a young leader who can guide you in this impending war that Pac has set upon us.”

Luc stood up and looked around the room. “I am ready to lead all of us. We will overcome what Pac has set in motion. Once we know the cure works for sure, Miti will start administrating it to all of us in a few days. In the meantime, we should have some merriment.” He turned to Jill and held out his hand. “Jill, my love, my mate. I have been reminded by many”—he pointedly looked over at our table, and I saw Brandon and Sandy’s big smiles in response—“that as a human you have customs you follow when it comes to love.” He got down on one knee, and Jill’s hand flew to her mouth while a resounding intake of breath sounded around the room as everyone realized what was happening.

Luc reached out and grabbed Jill’s hand. “Will you marry me and make our union official? Will you stand by my side and lead our pack into the future?”

“Yes!” She flung herself at Luc, and they held each other while everyone whistled and cheered. The room was in an uproar, and I smiled. Luc had timed the proposal just right. Dad’s removal as pack leader was already a side comment.

Jacob

I held tightlyonto Bruno’s hand and tried to send some of my life energy into him. It felt like I was in a bad dream, one where I’d lost my best friend and my mate all on the same day. I had felt Millie’s fear shoot straight into my heart, but I couldn’t do anything about it at the time. I’d been too busy trying to survive Bruno’s attack, then knocked unconscious. It had cracked my heart in half when I woke up and realized she was gone.

But my brother was still here, holding on to life. He had to recover. I couldn’t lose both of them.

“Why are you holding my hand?” Bruno mumbled, pulling his hand from mine.

I jolted upright, my mouth dropping open in shock. “You’re awake!”

“No duh,” Bruno said dryly.

My lips curved into a smile. I was so happy to hear him talking again. “How are you feeling?”

“Like I’ve been filled with a ton of rocks and am swimming through the ocean toward land.”

“That’s very descriptive.”

“Well, try waking up from that exact image and then feeling it for real.” Bruno tried to sit up but fell backward before he could even bend at his waist.

I put a hand on his chest, pressing him into the mattress. “Just relax, your body has been through a lot.”

He grunted. “All thanks to that Suzy girl, the one who’s always after you. She did something to me.”

“You mentioned she told you where Millie and I were. Do you remember anything more about your conversation with her?”

“She put something in my drink at Rosey’s. She was looking at me with that creepy smile of hers.”

What?! I slammed my fist into my leg, anger riding up my back. “She has caused nothing but trouble for years,” I growled, feeling my canines begin to elongate.

I looked back at Bruno, who looked scared. I immediately refocused. “Sorry. Everything is okay. Miti said she flushed whatever Suzy gave you from your system. Do you still feel unhinged?”

Bruno wiggled his fingers and toes, and said, “No, I actually feel myself again.”

I sighed in relief. “Thank goodness. I’ll go tell Miti her cure has worked.”

But before I could go, Bruno grabbed my sleeve. “What happened? Why am I here?”

“It wasn’t pretty. I don’t think I should—”

“Tell me, Jacob!”

I sighed. “You attacked me. Millie was there.”

As expected, Bruno turned a sickly shade of white. “What happened to Millie? I remember our conversation at Rosey’s. You told me you wanted me to back off, but I also remember calling Millie the next morning. We had a deep conversation about our future.” A shadow settled across his features. “If Millie was with you when she answered my call, do you think she’s playing both of us?”

My wolf reared its head, and I bared my teeth out of instinct to protect Millie, but those words settled in my brain. A memory floated to the forefront—one of Bruno entering the ice rink. Millie hadn’t recognized him yesterday. How was that possible when they’d been on dates?

“We should pay Millie a visit,” Bruno said, trying to sit up again.

“You’ll do no such thing,” Miti announced, coming in with a big bottle of liquid. “Drink this and then go back to sleep. Your body needs a lot more rest.”
