“Of course.”

“I would really like to take you to one of my favorite places in Sugarville.”

My heart warmed. “I would like that.”

“Really?”

“Yes, really, but . . .” Would it be rude to ask him to stay human?

“You can tell me anything, Millie. Don’t hesitate.”

“Can you . . . ?” I couldn’t get the words out.

He rubbed the top of my hands with his thumbs and, as if he could read my mind, said, “You’d like me to not shift? Is that what you’re asking?”

I nodded. “I don’t think I’m ready for that again.”

He smiled. “Of course. It’s not my favorite thing to do either.”

I breathed a sigh of relief, and he pulled me into his lap. I snuggled into his neck and enjoyed the feel of his arms around me, cocooned in what felt like the safest place I could imagine. Today was today, and I’d worry about tomorrow when it came.

Jacob

I was a nervous wreck.I’d never taken anyone but Bruno to this spot in the woods, and only after he begged me to for a solid month. This was my private place. A place I could let my wolf out to run about before changing back to human form, where I would then settle into the cave with my book and flashlight and read into the night.

Millie was going to come over tomorrow, and I was going to bring her here. Before that, though, I needed to make sure everything was in place. Thankfully, the snow had stopped for now so that I could bring in blankets, supplies for hot chocolate, books I thought Millie might like to read, and . . .

“Looking for these?” Bruno said.

I turned to face the cave entrance to see Bruno with his hand full of Christmas lights. I breathed a sigh of relief. “Yes, I was just looking for them. Thanks for bringing them. It’s so good to see you’re up and about again too.”

“I couldn’t stay in bed when you’re wooing your girl. I want to learn more about her and find out how I can see her sister again.”

“Yeah. It would be great for you to meet her.” No need to tell him yet that Millie had no idea where her sister was or if she would answer if contacted. “Did you want to help me string the lights?”

“I do. And the others were wondering if they could help too.”

“The others?”

“Yeah, you know, your other siblings.”

I looked at Bruno for a second, wondering if he forgot this was my secret place. He might know where it was, but I didn’t want anyone else knowing about it.

“They want to help,” he repeated.

“No, I’d rather not show them this place.”

Bruno gave me a crooked smile. “Well, if it helps, everyone already knows that you come to this spot when you want to get away.”

He waited for that to sink in, and I could see the smirk that grew on his face as I realized that everyone knew where my secret place was.

“You told them!” I cried. A snarl escaped, and I would have run straight at him if he hadn’t just recovered.

“Actually, I didn’t. I never said a word, just like I promised.”

I stopped breathing. “Someone followed me?”

“Yeah, Dad did.”
