“No doors can stop me from reaching you, Raghav. It was only a matter of time,” I smirk.

“You have no clue what a grave mistake you have committed by bypassing my security. It won’t take me a second to toss you out of this place. But I’m curious to know what brings you here tonight? What can I do for you?”

His nonchalant attitude hits me hard. I press the gun nozzle harder on his forehead, my fingers itching to pull that trigger.

“How about a confession to begin with?” I snap. “A confession about why you tried to kill Kailash Shergill.”

Raghav stares at me as if he didn’t expect me to find out.

“What happened? Don’t tell me amidst all the crimes that you have committed, you forgot about the gruesome accident at the Mahabalipur Ghats, which involved my dad, Kailash Shergill? The accident that nearly killed him.”

“How could I forget that?” Raghav grins, pulling his gun away from my head. “Kailash Shergill’s car speedily crossing the ghats. Pratap Walia’s vehicle bumping his car from behind. And Boom!!” he laughs. “His driver dies and Kailash Shergill goes into indefinite coma.”

I fist the gun, wanting to unload every bullet into his head as the visuals of that accident flash in my head.

“But the plan was to terrify, not kill.” Raghav continues, pushing my gun away from his head and walking to the mini bar at the side. “Steal Pratap Walia’s car, scare off Kailash Shergill and fuel the already burning flames of enmity between the two families.”

He pours himself a drink and then turns around. I might have lowered my gun, but I still very much want to fire every bullet into his damn head for hurting my dad.

“Our plan was to makeyoubelieve that it was Pratap Walia’s doing. That’s it.” He takes a sip of his drink. “I wasn’t even driving Pratap Walia’s car that day. One of our men was behind the wheel and lost control of the car while trying to scare off Kailash Shergill, leading to the unfortunate accident. It was just bad luck! I only helped my man hide the car after the incident.”

I grab his collar in rage. “Do you think I’ll believe you?”

“Do you think I care?” he scoffs, shrugging off my hands from his collar. “Thank your lucky stars, I had mercy on Kailash Shergill. I was following him that day and the accident happened right before my eyes. Had I not been present, he wouldn’t have received medical assistance so quickly. I was the one who phoned the ambulance. If I hadn’t intervened, he would have drowned in his own blood for hours on those ghats, eventually losing his life.”

I grab him by his throat, choking the life out of him.

“Your saving him in time doesn’t matter anymore. Becauseyouput his life in danger in the first place.”

He claws at my hands before grabbing me by my throat and trying to choke me. Our intensity to strangle each other matches in every way.

“You want to avenge the pain caused to a man who is not even your real father?” Raghav taunts with a grin.

That’s it. The next instant, my fist strikes his stomach, stealing his breath again.

“Kailash Shergill is my father,” I shout.

“Yeah, right, like I’m the most innocent man alive.”

Raghav laughs in my face, infuriating me further. This time, I punch his chest.

“He is my father,” I roar. “He might not be my biological father. He’s much more than that in every way it matters. He’s my lifeline. Always has been. And that’s enough to make me his son. I’ll die for him if need be.”

Yes. That’s true. Kailash Shergill is not my biological father. If anyone had told me this earlier, I would have killed them. But it’s a fact which was revealed to me a few years ago by Dad himself, and since then, my love and respect for him has doubled. It doesn’t matter to me if he didn’t give birth to me. My dad has raised me well enough to understand that the person who raises you with good morals and love is superior to the one who gave birth to you. My father means everything to me, and nobody can take that away from me. The only person who knew about this other than my dad and me was Krish.

Then, out of nowhere, I received a mysterious gift from Raghav at my wedding reception. It was a handwritten note in a box that said Kailash Shergill was not my biological father. Raghav had given a similar gift to Meher that same night, with proof that Vishnu was Pratap Walia’s son.

“Stop living under false pretences, Ayaan,” Raghav’s mocking tone interrupts my chain of thoughts. “Accept the reality.”

“The reality is that you didn’t tell me anything new. So, stop living in that bubble. You cannot undermine my trust in the man I consider my father. Your surprise element failed miserably because I’ve known this fact for years.”

Raghav stares at me in disbelief. It’s my turn to shock him a bit.

“Your plan was good. Open up the dark secrets of our respective fathers and turn Meher and me against them. But unfortunately, nothing like that happened. You and your men cannot shake the foundations of the Shergill and Walia family,” I say sternly.

“Oh, but we can,” he snarls. “You have no idea what we are capable of. You cannot even guess who we truly are.”

“The international mafia gang, known for its illegal arms and ammunition supply worldwide – The Bat Syndicate. That’s what you are,” I reply.
