“It’s not okay, Kailash. He’s turning my kids against me.” I unleash my grievances.

Kailash looks confused and concerned.

“No, he would never do that. You’re misunderstanding him again.” Kailash staunchly defends Ayaan. “If you tell me clearly what happened, only then I’ll be able to help you.”

“I don’t need your help. I want to speak to Ayaan.”

“Alright,” he sighs. “Ayaan should be home shortly. Why don’t we sit in the drawing room until then and wait for him? Please.”

Though I don’t want to be here at Shergill Mansion for long, I still agree and stride towards the drawing room, already knowing where it is. He follows behind me.

I take a seat on a single couch, feeling angry and agitated. Kailash sits on the couch next to me.

“All my kids, Kailash. All of them are opposing me at every step. This has never happened before. Why now? It’s because Ayaan is brainwashing them,” I continue expressing my concern, fuelled by anger.

“Pratap, why would Ayaan do that?”

“Because he enjoys provoking me. He knows that our relationship will never be cordial, so he does this to make things worse.”

This time, Kailash smiles as if what I am saying right now is nothing serious. Attempting to ease the tension, he advises me to relax and calls for a servant to bring water, hoping to find a resolution before it escalates further.

The servant returns with a glass of water, offering it to me, but I sternly refuse.

“I don’t want it.”

Once again, aware of my temper, Kailash attempts to lighten the mood, reminiscing about our past friendship.

“You were always old-fashioned. But I didn’t know you were so orthodox as to refuse water from your daughter’s in-laws’ house,” Kailash teases.

I frown, and just before the servant can retreat, I snatch the glass of water, and gulp it down in one go. I was indeed thirsty, though I didn’t want to admit it.

Kailash holds back a grin, watching my reaction.

“Don’t think you can manipulate me or calm me down,” I warn. “I am not leaving until I speak to your son.”

Kailash nods, maintaining his composure.

“My son is also your son-in-law. It’s high time you start giving him some respect if not love. And believe me, he has no reason to manipulate your kids. They are wise enough to know what to do in any given situation.”

Fuelled by anger, I retort. “I understand that Meher, being Ayaan’s wife, will follow his suggestions. But what has Ayaan done to turn Aksh and Vishnu against me? They were never like this. Do you know what happened today? Vishnu blackmailed me. Can you believe it? And for what? To stop me from expelling Aksh from the party.”

The revelation leaves Kailash confused.

“I’m warning you, Kailash, if this continues, I’ll have to take some serious action against all of them. And your son Ayaan won’t be spared either because I know this is all his doing.”

This time, Kailash laughs. I can’t believe he finds my predicament amusing.

“Did you just laugh at me?” I bristle.

“Yes, I did,” he replies, controlling his laughter. “Pratap, do you realise how you sound today? Just like a father who’s unable to handle three kids under 10.”

He chuckles again, and I roll my eyes.

“I don’t think you can understand this. Why am I even here?”

I’m about to get up and leave when Kailash grabs my hand, forcing me to sit again.

“Alright, let’s get serious. Tell me what happened today that has soured your mood and enraged you so much that you came here.”
