MEHER

Following the unexpected encounter with Ayaan’s biological father at the party, Krish safely escorted us back to the Shergill Mansion. As we stepped out of the car, a loud blast was heard, and the monitoring room was engulfed in flames. Although the guards were able to control the fire, the past two hours were chaotic. The monitoring room, where Krish and his team not only oversaw the security of the Shergill Mansion but also gathered crucial information about the Bat Syndicate, was gutted in a fire that broke out due to a short circuit, resulting in the loss of valuable data. Ayaan, upon his return, took charge of the situation along with Krish and his team, while Paapa (Kailash Shergill), Bhaskar Uncle, and I were asked to stay outside until the fire was extinguished. Paapa was panicking, but I assured him that it was an accident. Deep down, we all knew it was an attack by Tej Khurana and Raghav. Unable to target us at the party, they planned this deliberate short circuit.

A similar incident occurred at the Walia House, where Dad’s home office got burnt completely. Devika bhabhi, who hadn’t joined us at the party, was alone at home when the unfortunate event unfolded. After calming Paapa, I spoke to bhabhi who told me how it all happened. She had been in the kitchen, boiling milk, when she detected smoke emanating from the home office. A sudden blast-like sound startled her, causing her to recoil in fear. Fortunately, she managed to regain her composure, avoiding a potential disaster, especially considering she was pregnant. Luckily, the guards and the servants of Walia House doused the fire in time, preventing it from spreading to other rooms. A surge of anger coursed through me, a desire to punish those responsible for planning this deliberate attack on both the residences. However, my hands were tied, and the frustration of my helplessness gnawed at me. If I, driven by desperation, yearned for revenge, I could only imagine the turmoil in Ayaan’s mind. Already grappling with the repercussions of numerous revelations, the news of both his families being targeted had pushed his fury to new heights.

I watch Ayaan from afar as he talks to the security personnel at the Shergill Mansion. Meanwhile, Krish is continuously on calls and is busy reprimanding the guards over how an outsider could have triggered a short circuit within the mansion despite the robust security measures in place. Krish’s concern is valid, raising suspicions that the perpetrator might be someone from within. But I know Ayaan and Krish will find that soon.

Ayaan has discarded his suit jacket, and the silky fabric of his white shirt captivates my attention, even in this tense situation—the way he casually rolls up his sleeves while conversing with the men, his expressive gestures as he points towards the Shergill Mansion to issue orders, the gentle rub of his forehead as if alleviating a headache and that commanding walk, a predatory stride as he approaches Krish for further discussions—everything about him floors me. Today, I am utterly charmed by my husband as I see him in complete control. Subconsciously, I rise from my chair and walk towards Ayaan, who is engrossed in talking to Krish. It’s only when I’m a few feet away that he glances in my direction, a hint of concern on his face as he takes the remaining steps. He lovingly cups my face in his palms.

“Are you okay, baby?” he inquires, planting a tender kiss on my forehead.

Now, I am more than okay, his lips providing comfort against my skin. He gently lifts my face to meet his gaze.

“All this must have scared you,” he remarks.

I offer him a reassuring smile while stroking his cheek.

“I’m a politician’s daughter and a social reformer’s daughter-in-law. I need to get used to all this. And what matters the most is that I am the Queen to my King. The King who is unafraid and capable of standing alone, fighting for the safety of his kingdom and emerging victorious. There’s nothing for me to fear.”

Ayaan gives me a faint smile before planting another kiss on my forehead.

“Just a few more minutes, and then we shall leave,” he adds.

“Leave?” I inquire, confused.

“Yes, to the safe house. We will be staying there until the guards confirm that the Shergill Mansion is safe for us to return. It probably won’t be more than one night.”

Safe house? Where is that?

“And what about my family?” I ask.

“They will be doing the same tonight. Vishnu is taking care of that.”

Krish returns to us.

“Ayaan, I was thinking, what if we just send Kailash Uncle and Meher to Austria for some time until we sort everything here?”

“No,” I rebuke. “I’m going nowhere. I’m not leaving my King. How could you even suggest that, Krish?”

“Meher, please understand. If the family is around, such threats will keep looming over us. With you and uncle in Austria, under the protection of my security and the Fed Cops there, Ayaan will have one thing less to worry about.”

I’m about to argue when Ayaan speaks up.

“No, Krish. Dad and Meher will stay with us here.”

“But Ayaan—”

“If they are away from me, then I’ll indeed have one more thing to worry about. Their safety is of utmost importance. No matter how many guards are around them, I don’t trust anyone to keep them safe apart from me. And that will happen only when they stay under my watch, not far away in Austria, where I’ll have limited control over their protection.”

Krish understands his point and shakes his head.

“All right, as you say. I’ll check with the men if the safe house is ready,” he says before leaving us alone.

Ayaan looks at me and smiles.

“Take Dad and Bhaskar Uncle with you to the safe house and get some rest.”

“Aren’t you coming?”
